Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Patel,

I hope you are doing good. My name is Rudresh Patel and I am writing this letter with reagrds to our chat during the flight. We were on a WestJet flight arriving to NewYork. I was sitting on the seat beside you and we had a great talk during the journey.

Since, you told me about your business I have not been able to get it out of my head. Currently, I am working as an Assistant Manager at Titos bar and grill but I would love to land a job at one of your restaurants if possible.

Lately, I have been thinking to move to New Jersey and so I am looking for a similar kind of job over there. I think I would be a good fit for the job as I have two years of experience working in this field. Moreover, there will be so much new things for me to learn and develop my personal skills.

I would be pleased to work in your chain of restaurants and trust you to do the needful.

Yours faithfully,

Rudresh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points required by the task instructions. You clearly reminded the reader when and where you met by stating, 'We were on a WestJet flight arriving to NewYork,' told him the kind of job you are interested in by mentioning an Assistant Manager role at one of his restaurants, and explained why you would be suitable by highlighting your two years of experience in the field. While all parts are addressed, some ideas show a tendency toward brief development rather than thorough extension. For instance, explaining your suitability could have been enhanced by providing more specific examples of your managerial duties. To reach the next level, you need to extend and fully develop all your main ideas, offering richer detail and clearer elaboration for every part of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows an appropriate structure for a formal or semi-formal correspondence. Your ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with the reminder of your encounter, moving to your current situation and interest, and concluding with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different topics, such as the flight details in the first paragraph and your job preferences in the second. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical or relies on basic linking words like 'Moreover,' and referencing could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, you should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between paragraphs feel completely natural and fluid.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly, though it remains somewhat basic and contains a few lexical errors. You use functional terms related to the hospitality industry, such as 'Assistant Manager' and 'chain of restaurants.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as spelling 'NewYork' without a space, writing 'reagrds' instead of 'regards,' and using the informal expression 'doing good' instead of 'doing well.' Furthermore, phrases like 'trust you to do the needful' sound slightly unnatural or dated in this context. To move into a higher band, you need to use a wider, more precise range of vocabulary and less common lexical items with accurate spelling, style, and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like 'Since, you told me about your business I have not been able to get it out of my head.' There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present throughout the text, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Since' and missing articles or spacing in places like 'arriving to NewYork.' Despite these errors, they are not frequent enough to impede communication, and the majority of your sentences remain understandable. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining tighter control over grammatical accuracy, prepositions, and punctuation.
