Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally respond to the discussion we had during your trip to London. I was blessed that day for your career encouragement and motivational words. I believe having you as my leader would sharpen my professional goals.
To begin, I would like to remind you that we met last month at the business lounge during our trip, and discovered we were heading the same direction. You called my attention when I almost forgot my ID card, and we began communication. It was really inspiring to discuss career matters with you.
However, I would like to inform you that I am a technical experienced engineer, I have worked with several maintenance companies, all the details are in my resume, and i have attached a copy to this email. Furthermore, I am interested in handing the maintenance and technical department of your establishment if I am given the opportunity, and I assure you that, having me in your team would be the greatest move your company will take this year. Furthermore, my technical exposure, and project management skills will be applied to strengthen your core values and company's vision.
In conclusion, it would be a smart move from you, if given this opportunity. I will wait patiently for your reply.
Yours Faithfully,
Sotonye Davids

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you recall meeting in the business lounge on the journey to London, identify an interest in a technical role, and mention maintenance experience, technical exposure, and project-management skills. The purpose is clear, but some details are less fully developed than others. In particular, the job request is framed as managing a “maintenance and technical department,” without explaining what role or responsibilities you seek in a restaurant, and your suitability claims would be more convincing with a specific example of relevant work. The reference to an attached résumé also sounds like an email rather than a letter. Make the request more direct and connect your experience clearly to the employer’s restaurant business.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph recalling the meeting, a paragraph about your experience and desired role, and a closing. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “To begin” and “In conclusion” signal progression. However, some linking is mechanical or not quite logical: “However” does not introduce a contrast, while “Furthermore” is repeated in the same paragraph. The long sentence beginning “I am a technical experienced engineer” combines several points and makes their relationships less clear. Use shorter sentences and more natural transitions, and ensure each paragraph has a distinct purpose. This would preserve the coherent structure while making the progression smoother and the connections less conspicuous.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “maintenance,” “project management skills,” and “professional goals.” Some less common expressions are attempted, but several are inaccurate or unnatural for this context. “I was blessed that day” and “having you as my leader” sound overly personal, while “handing the maintenance and technical department” does not express the intended role clearly. “Technical experienced engineer” is also an awkward word combination. Choose precise, conventional language for a professional letter, such as describing yourself as an experienced technical engineer and saying you would like to manage or work in the maintenance department. These adjustments would improve naturalness without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the discussion we had” and the conditional phrase “if I am given the opportunity.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. The sentence “I am a technical experienced engineer, I have worked…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; separate them or use a conjunction. In “I would like to inform you that I am a … engineer, I have worked…,” the same problem occurs. Capitalise “I” in “i have attached,” and revise “having me in your team would be the greatest move your company will take” to avoid the awkward tense and structure. More accurate sentence boundaries and careful editing would strengthen control.
