Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter as a follow-up on our conversation that had happened last month in a plane and would like to know about the job opportunity that you had offered me during our conversation.
The flight was from Isatanbul to Canada and I sat next to you in plane. As I mention you earlier that I have 7 years of experience in food and hospitality industry and I have excellent customer service skills. I would like to work any of the branches of your restaurant in Ontario.
I would prefer any full-time permanent job but I am happy to consider other available opportunities as well. I am confident, hardworking and always eager to learn. I would definitely bring positive outcome. Could you please let me know if any vancancies are available and if there is any procedure to apply for them.
Thank you for your advice and offering me the opportunity. I would like to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Arsh Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you remind the businessman that you met on a flight from Istanbul to Canada, state your interest in a full-time permanent role at one of his Ontario restaurants, and give relevant reasons, including seven years in hospitality and customer-service skills. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the request for information about vacancies and the application process is appropriate. Your suitability is supported with relevant experience, although claims such as being “confident, hardworking and always eager to learn” are general and could be strengthened with a brief example or a specific role, such as server or supervisor. Overall, the task is fully addressed; more specific support would make the ideas more developed and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible progression: you explain why you are writing, recall the meeting, describe the work you want, and close with a request and thanks. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “I would prefer” and “Could you please let me know” make the purpose easy to follow. The organisation is coherent, but some links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “I” to begin sentences. The meeting details and your experience are also crowded into the same paragraph, so the transition between recalling the flight and presenting your qualifications could be smoother. A clearer paragraph break and more varied referencing would make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the purpose and relevant details, including “job opportunity,” “customer service skills,” “full-time permanent job,” and “available opportunities.” However, several choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “follow-up on our conversation that had happened” is awkward, “in plane” is missing a natural expression, and “positive outcome” does not clearly describe what you would contribute. There are also spelling errors in “Isatanbul” and “vancancies.” Aim for more natural collocations and precise job-related language, such as “follow up on our conversation,” “on the flight,” and “make a positive contribution.” This would improve fluency and professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “I am writing this letter … and would like to know” and the polite question beginning “Could you please let me know…”. Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “that had happened last month” uses an unnecessarily complex past perfect; “As I mention you earlier” has an incorrect verb form and sentence pattern; and “I sat next to you in plane” needs an article. The sentence about vacancies would also be clearer as two coordinated questions or a single carefully structured request. Review past-tense forms, articles, and verb patterns, while keeping the useful variety of sentence structures you already attempt.
