Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope you find this letter well. I am writing to enquire about the employment opportunity in one of your restaurants.
My name is Suman, we met each other in a flight from Vancouver to Toronto on 1st October 2026. During this flight we were sitting next to eat other and you informed me about your business and told me to contact for job.
As I have recently completed a 2-year program in hospitality which also included an internship for 3 months. Now I would like to pursue my professional career in the same field and want to work as a shift manager in one of your restaurants.
I believe my hand-on practise during co-up can help me settle down in the work culture smoothly. Currently I am residing in Toronto; my residence is only 10 minutes away from your restaurant in the city.
Due to my flexible schedule I will be able to work any shift which will be allotted to me.
I hope you consider my application for the available opportunities in your business. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you remind Mr Smith that you met on the Vancouver–Toronto flight, identify your interest in a shift-manager role, and explain your hospitality training, internship, availability, and proximity to the restaurant. These details make your suitability understandable and maintain a clear purpose throughout. The explanation of your practical experience could be more specific—for example, mention a responsibility or skill gained during the internship—so the employer can see more directly how it prepares you to manage a shift. The letter is appropriately framed as a professional enquiry and ends with a suitable request for consideration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, recalls the meeting, presents your job interest and qualifications, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and transitions such as “As” and “Currently” guide the reader through the information. The progression is generally easy to follow, but some links feel mechanical or unclear. In particular, “As I have recently completed…” is not connected grammatically to the following sentence, and the move from your training to your location and availability could be smoother. Use complete, well-linked sentences and make the relationship between each supporting detail and your suitability explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the purpose and relevant details, including “employment opportunity,” “hospitality,” “shift manager,” and “flexible schedule.” However, several noticeable word-choice, spelling, or collocation problems reduce precision and naturalness. For example, “find this letter well” is not the usual expression, “sitting next to eat other” appears to be a mistaken phrase, and “hand-on practise” is inaccurate. “Settle down in the work culture” is also an awkward way to describe adapting to a workplace. Choose conventional professional expressions and check spelling and word forms carefully; this will make your otherwise clear message sound more fluent and assured.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main message remains clear. Some sentences are grammatically controlled, such as “I am writing to enquire about the employment opportunity in one of your restaurants.” However, some errors remain in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. “My name is Suman, we met each other…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, while “As I have recently completed…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence fragment. The phrase “told me to contact for job” also lacks a clear object and article. Review sentence boundaries, clause structure, and articles, and aim to make each sentence complete while retaining some variety.
