Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Burger,

Greetings, I am Qamar Raza, one of your co-travellers in the trip from Karachi to Lahore on the 20th of August. We met on the airport cafe and then spent the whole journey together discussing our lives in detail and it was a great pleasure meeting and talking to you.

I remember you owned a chain of restaurants in Karachi, my home city, and I have always enjoyed the high quality of food being offered there. Even though I myself manage the asian cuisuine department of an international chain of restaurant but I find its food rather lacks the peculiar taste, which has recently sparked the idea of shifting to your restaurant.

I bring over 10 years of managerial experience along with special courses for pan asian cuisuine throughout my career. For the last 2 years I have been awarded the best manager for asian cuisuine nationwide. I also hold international collaborations with travel agencies and manage entire tourists meals for 2 weeks during their stay in the city, which will be a valuable addition to your department and a source of publicity as well.

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards,

Qamar Raza

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the journey from Karachi to Lahore and its date, explain your interest in a managerial role in the businessman’s restaurant, and support your suitability with experience, training, awards, and tourism-related contacts. The details about managing an Asian cuisine department and receiving nationwide recognition make your case persuasive. The job request could be stated more directly—for example, specify whether you are seeking a restaurant manager or cuisine-department manager—and the reason for leaving your current role is not entirely clear in “its food rather lacks the peculiar taste.” A concise, explicit request for an opportunity or meeting would also make the purpose of the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you remind the reader of the meeting, describe your interest, and then present your qualifications. Paragraphing supports this progression, and the closing is appropriate. The letter is therefore coherent overall. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The second paragraph moves from praising the restaurants to criticising your current employer and then to wanting to move, without clearly explaining the connection. The long final paragraph also combines experience, awards, and tourism partnerships in one dense block. Use clearer transitions and separate the strongest qualifications from the additional business benefit to make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional enquiry, including “managerial experience,” “international collaborations,” and “valuable addition,” which help communicate your qualifications. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “pan Asian cuisine,” though spelling and collocation errors reduce precision: “cuisuine” is misspelled, and “peculiar taste” does not clearly express the intended meaning. “Co-travellers” and “airport cafe” are understandable but less natural in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional professional phrasing and check spelling carefully, especially for repeated specialist terms. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both straightforward sentences and more complex structures, such as “Even though I myself manage…” and the sentence explaining your tourism work. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “We met on the airport cafe,” the preposition and article pattern is incorrect; “at the airport café” is more natural. “I remember you owned a chain” would be clearer as “I remember that you own a chain,” while “I have always enjoyed the high quality of food being offered there” has an awkward passive construction. The sentence beginning “Even though” also needs clearer punctuation and a more complete contrast. Review articles, prepositions, tense consistency, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
