Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Aman,
I am writing this letter to apply for a job in your restaurant. We met on a flight from Vancouver to Toronto on 22nd August 2026. We travelled by Flair Airlines and sat next to each other in seat 25. You told me that you run a number of restaurants in Toronto; I would like to dine at your restaurant.
When I went through your official website for a restaurant named Bombay Masala, I noticed a few Positions are available to apply for. However, positions like server, cashier and dishwasher are relatively friendly with my previous experience. I have worked as a banquet server in Vancouver Convention Centre events and have valid SIR certification.
Therefore, I believe these positions are suitable for me as its nearly 1 kilometre away from my residence. I can do overnight shifts as i have a break from my college. i request you to give me an opportunity to show my skills and highlight my strong areas.
looking forward for your reply
your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you identify the flight from Vancouver to Toronto and its date, state that you are interested in restaurant roles, and give relevant reasons for your suitability, including banquet-serving experience and SIR certification. The job preference is less precise, however: listing server, cashier and dishwasher leaves the reader unsure which role you most want. Your reason that the restaurant is close to your home and your availability for overnight shifts are useful, but the connection between these details and your suitability could be explained more clearly. Develop your experience with a brief example of relevant duties or skills, and make a direct, specific request about the position you are seeking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a generally sensible order: it recalls the meeting, introduces possible roles, then explains your experience and availability before closing. This makes the purpose understandable. However, some links between ideas are unclear or mechanical. For example, “Therefore” does not clearly connect your suitability to the restaurant being near your residence, and “However” does not express a contrast between the available positions and your experience. The paragraphing also leaves the final request and sign-off crowded together. Use separate paragraphs for the meeting, your preferred role and qualifications, and your request; choose linking expressions that show the exact relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough task-related vocabulary to communicate your purpose, including “banquet server,” “cashier,” “dishwasher,” and “SIR certification.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions such as “apply for” and “opportunity.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “positions … are relatively friendly with my previous experience” does not clearly mean that your experience is relevant, and “highlight my strong areas” is vague. “I would like to dine at your restaurant” also distracts from the job application. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording, and check capitalization and spelling, including “positions,” “I,” and “faithfully.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main message remains clear. For example, “When I went through your official website …, I noticed…” shows an attempt to combine ideas in a complex sentence. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “as its nearly 1 kilometre away,” the possessive “its” is incorrect in this construction; write “as it is nearly one kilometre away.” The sentence beginning “I can do overnight shifts” needs consistent capitalization, and the closing should be punctuated and formatted as a complete sign-off. Review sentence boundaries and capitalization, and make sure each sentence clearly connects its reason to your application.
