Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jacob,

My name is Harnoor and I am writing to inquire about a job opportunity in one of your's restaurants. I went to Germany last week through flight AB66F and I was sitting next to you. During this journey we talked for a while and get familiar with each other.

During our conversation, I mentioned that I am a experienced chef and currently looking for a job in a restaurant in Kolkata. You mentioned about your restaurants in various parts of the world and also looking for skilled staff. I am really interested to become part of your organisation.

I worked as a chef in a famous restaurant in Germany called Five cloves for ten years. I decided to move to India to look after my elderly parents and wants to pursue my career. I won various awards for my culinary skills and give free cooking classes to children. I hold certifications for mastering various cuisines and for developing unique food recipes. I attached my resume and my cover letter to this email for your consideration. I look forward hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Harnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you identify the flight and explain that you sat beside the businessman, state your interest in a chef position, and support your suitability with ten years’ experience, awards, cuisine certifications, and cooking classes. The reason for moving to India also gives useful context. These details make the request relevant and persuasive. To strengthen the letter further, make the job request more specific—for example, mention the type of restaurant or role you hope to take on—and connect your experience more directly to what his restaurants need. The reference to the attached résumé and cover letter is appropriate, though a brief closing request for an interview or a chance to discuss vacancies would make the purpose even clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening recalls the meeting, the next paragraph explains your interest, and the final paragraph presents your qualifications and closes the request. This progression is easy to follow, and phrases such as “During our conversation” help link ideas. The paragraphs are also sensibly focused. However, some connections are a little mechanical, and the final paragraph contains several separate points—your work history, move, awards, classes, certifications, and attachments—without much grouping or explanation of how they relate. Use a clearer transition into your qualifications and organise the evidence around relevant skills. A more direct final sentence requesting a response or interview would also give the letter a stronger sense of completion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “culinary skills,” “certifications,” “consideration,” and “organisation.” These choices communicate your experience and intentions clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some phrases are less natural or precise: “went to Germany last week through flight” and “get familiar with each other” do not express the meeting smoothly, while “mastering various cuisines” is an awkward description of a qualification. “Your’s” is also an incorrect written form. Aim for more natural collocations and precise professional wording, such as describing the flight you took and the cuisines in which you are trained. This would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation of your move to India and the sentence describing your experience and awards. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “I am a experienced chef” needs the article “an,” and “we talked for a while and get familiar” shifts incorrectly from past to present; use a consistent past form. In “I decided to move … and wants to pursue,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “I look forward hearing” needs “to hearing.” There are also extra spaces and inconsistent punctuation. Review articles, tense consistency, agreement, and verb patterns, then proofread carefully to improve accuracy while retaining your varied sentence structures.
