Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
Hope you are doing great!
I am writing with regard to our previous conversation took place in place journey. I am Emma and we met on place two days ago, you were on a business trip to London and I was sitting right next to you. During our conversation, you gave me your business card and offered me a job position of supervisor at one of your restaurants. I am actually interested in taking a role of chef as I am a great cook and can make variety of dishes. I remember vividly that you owns a chain of restaurants and if you would appoint me as a chef I can be proved a greatest asset for your business. I must tell you that recently I won a Competition held in Brazil. Among many dishes prepared by many chefs, mine was choosen with high voting and it becomes by signature dish. The judges was impressed by my serving skills and taste of the food. I would greatly appreciate if you could give me an opportunity to show case my skills in kitchen.
Thank you in advance for your kind co-operation and support. I look forward to working with you.
Yours faithfully,
Emma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you identify the journey and London meeting, state that you want a chef role rather than the supervisor position, and explain your suitability through cooking ability and a competition award. The example about your signature dish and the judges’ reaction gives useful support, so the letter’s purpose is clear throughout. The meeting details are somewhat repetitive (“we met on place two days ago” and “I was sitting right next to you”), and the reason you would suit the role could be developed further with specific experience, such as how long you have cooked or what responsibilities you have handled. Overall, the relevant ideas are extended, though a little more precise support would strengthen them.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a sensible sequence: it recalls the meeting, explains the job you want, gives evidence of your ability, and closes politely. This makes the overall arrangement coherent. However, most of the content is presented in one long paragraph, so the shift from recalling the conversation to describing your qualifications is not clearly signposted. Some links also feel mechanical or unclear, particularly “I remember vividly that you owns a chain of restaurants and if you would appoint me…” Consider separating the meeting and job request from your evidence of suitability, and use clearer transitions such as “Since then” or “In support of my application.” This would make the progression easier to follow and improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “supervisor,” “signature dish,” “judges,” and “serving skills.” These help communicate your interest and qualifications, and the reader can understand your main points. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “job position,” “proved a greatest asset,” and “show case my skills in kitchen” do not sound idiomatic in this context. There are also spelling errors in “choosen” and “co-operation.” Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “apply for a chef position,” “be an asset to your business,” and “demonstrate my skills in the kitchen.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if you would appoint me as a chef…” and a relative clause in “a Competition held in Brazil.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “our previous conversation took place” needs a relative marker (“that took place”), “you owns” should be “you own,” and “The judges was impressed” should be “The judges were impressed.” Tense control is also uneven in “it becomes by signature dish,” where the past form is needed. Review subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and aim to produce more consistently accurate sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
