IELTS Writing Task 1 question
During a recent plane journey, you sat next to a businessman who owns a chain of restaurants. You talked to him and he suggested that you should contact him about a possible job in one of his restaurants.
Write a letter to this businessman. In your letter
- remind him when and where you met
- tell him what kind of job you are interested in
- say why you think you would be suitable for the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Donald,
I am writing this letter to remind you of our earlier discussion about assisting me with a job in one of your eateries. We were aboard the same flight (Air-Peace 23) on the 28th of January. We also sat on the same row ( seat 28 & 29). If you remember vividly, we had coversation last week.
Furthermore, I have a bachelor's degree in accounting. I can work as an accountant in any of your restaurant. With my expertise, I can efficiently keep track of financial records, manage budgets and give summary of the overall expenditures in your establishments.
Also, I am very competent in my field. I have a wealth of experience ranging from, medium to large scale organisations as an accountant. Similarly, I have over 3 years experience working in a restaurant. Having these set of qualification, I believe I am capable to handle this role.
I hope this letter finds you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Roland Odigie

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points: you identify the flight and date, state that you want an accountant role, and explain your qualifications and relevant experience. The details about managing financial records and budgets make your suitability reasonably clear. The purpose is also apparent from the opening. However, the reminder is slightly confusing: “we had coversation last week” does not clearly connect with the stated flight date, and the task says he suggested you contact him, which could be acknowledged more directly. Your closing, “I hope this letter finds you for your consideration,” is unclear as a request. Make the contact purpose explicit and develop the job request with a clear next step, such as asking to discuss a vacancy or interview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening recalls the meeting, the middle paragraphs describe your preferred role and experience, and the final line closes the message. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Also” signal additions, but they are somewhat mechanical and do not always show the precise relationship between ideas. For example, the experience paragraph could connect your restaurant background directly to the accounting role. The reference to “last week” after giving a specific flight date also interrupts the progression because the timing is unclear. Use more natural transitions and ensure each paragraph develops one connected purpose; a direct closing request would give the letter a stronger ending.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “financial records,” “manage budgets,” “expenditures,” and “wealth of experience.” These choices communicate your qualifications, and the meaning is generally clear. Some wording is inaccurate or unnatural, however: “eateries” is less suitable than “restaurants” in this context, “had coversation” contains a spelling error and is not a natural phrase, and “finds you for your consideration” does not express your intended meaning. “A wealth of experience ranging from, medium to large scale organisations” is also awkwardly phrased. Aim for precise, conventional business expressions and check spelling and collocations. This would make your vocabulary sound more controlled and professional without needing unnecessarily elaborate words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the conditional “If you remember vividly” and the sentence beginning “Having these set of qualification.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and the list of accounting duties is easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, plurals, and agreement: “in any of your restaurant” should be “in any of your restaurants,” while “these set of qualification” needs plural agreement throughout. The phrase “I am capable to handle” also uses an incorrect grammatical pattern; use “capable of handling.” There are occasional punctuation and spacing issues, such as the space after the opening parenthesis. Review these patterns and aim for consistently accurate sentences while retaining your range.
