Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manan,

I am Aditya, I hope you are well. I am writing to you for a possible job opportunity at one of your restaurants as suggested during our conversation.

We were flying from Goa to Mumbai by Indigo on 2nd of October, 2026 and happen to have seats besides each other. While in our conversation, you had mentioned there may be an opportunity at one of your food chain.

I am primarily interested in Head Chef role. Additionally, Cook 1 roles and resposibilties are also my interests.

A little details about myself: I hold a culinary degree from a reputed educational establishment, Muchhala college. Futhermore, working as Cook 2 at Taj Mumbai for 2 years has given me a hands on experience in the kitchen. What is more, I have also won the Masterchef India 2024. I am an expert in multiple cuisines, but Italian is my speciality. This is because of my certificate course for Italian cusine for an college in Italy. Therefore, I find myself fit for the job.

I am attaching my resume and experience for your reference.

I will be looking forward for your response.

Regards,

Aditya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points clearly. You identify the journey as the Goa-to-Mumbai flight on 2 October and remind Manan that you sat together and discussed a possible opening. You specify a Head Chef position and support your suitability with relevant qualifications, two years of kitchen experience, a competition win, and Italian-cuisine training. These details make your case persuasive and keep the response focused on the purpose. The job preference could be made more precise: mentioning Cook 1 roles as an additional interest makes your main target slightly less definite. You could also connect your experience more explicitly to the responsibilities of a Head Chef, such as leading a kitchen team or planning menus.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you explain why you are writing, recall the meeting, state the role you want, and present your qualifications before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Additionally,” “Furthermore,” and “Therefore” guide the reader through your points. The progression is easy to follow, though some linking is a little mechanical, particularly the repeated additive transitions in the qualifications paragraph. The sentence beginning “A little details about myself” also introduces the evidence somewhat abruptly. A more natural transition, followed by grouping your education and work experience together and then your specialist skills, would make the letter flow more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a professional enquiry, including “culinary degree,” “hands on experience,” “multiple cuisines,” and “speciality.” These choices communicate your qualifications and interests clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “food chain” for a restaurant business, “Cook 1 roles and resposibilties,” and “I find myself fit for the job.” There are also spelling errors in “resposibilties,” “Futhermore,” and “cusine,” which reduce precision. Aim for natural professional phrasing and check spelling carefully; this would help you use your vocabulary more flexibly and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both straightforward sentences and more developed structures, for example, “working as Cook 2 at Taj Mumbai for 2 years has given me…” and “This is because of my certificate course…”. Meaning remains clear throughout, but some grammatical errors occur. In “I hope you are well,” the opening would be better joined to the preceding clause with a full stop or suitable conjunction. Other examples include “happen to have seats” instead of “happened to have seats,” “a little details” instead of “a few details,” and “for an college” instead of “at a college.” Review past-tense consistency when recounting the flight, as well as articles, plurals, and sentence punctuation. More accurate control of these forms would strengthen the letter.
