Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr John,
I am writing regarding the conversation we had about a possible job opportunity in one of your restaurents. I would like to request your assistance in this matter.
To begin with, last week both of us were sitting next to each other while travelling to London. The flight was schduled for Mumbai to London from Delhi airport at 3 pm. During this journey you mentioned about owning a chain of restaurents and adviced me to reach out to you for a job.
I am a Chef by profession and looking for a job as I recently moved to London. I have a great interest in cooking and I want to build my career in this food industry.
Finally, I believe I will be suitable for this job because of 5 years of experience as a Head Chef in a famous restaurant in Mumbai. My experience in this sector can contribute to your restaurants if given this opportunity.
I hope you will be able to assist me in this matter and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely
Dilpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you remind the businessman that you met on a flight to London, state that you are seeking chef work, and explain your five years’ experience as a head chef. The reason you give for contacting him is also clear, and the letter maintains an appropriate, polite purpose throughout. The suitability point is supported with relevant experience, although it could be extended with a specific example of a skill or achievement, such as managing a kitchen team or creating menus. The meeting details are somewhat confusing: “travelling to London” and “from Delhi airport” do not make the route entirely clear. Clarifying the departure and destination would make the reminder more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from its purpose, to the meeting, to the job sought and your suitability, followed by a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “To begin with” and “Finally” make the sequence easy to follow. The ideas are generally connected logically, so the message is straightforward to understand. However, these signposts are somewhat formulaic for a personal letter, and “I would like to request your assistance in this matter” is repeated in effect by the closing request. A more natural transition between the meeting and your current job search, with less repetition, would make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the purpose and relevant details, with useful job-related terms such as “Head Chef,” “chain of restaurants,” and “career in this food industry.” The tone is generally polite and appropriate. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “restaurents,” “schduled,” and “adviced.” Some phrases are also unnatural or repetitive, particularly “request your assistance in this matter” and “mentioned about owning.” More accurate spelling and natural collocations would strengthen the message. Aim to use precise terms for your experience and skills rather than relying on broad phrases such as “contribute to your restaurants.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “I believe I will be suitable for this job because of 5 years of experience…” The message remains clear, and several sentences are grammatically controlled. Some errors persist in sentence construction and grammatical patterns: “both of us were sitting next to each other while travelling” is awkwardly structured, and “you mentioned about owning” uses an incorrect pattern after “mentioned.” The phrase “because of 5 years of experience as a Head Chef” would be more complete as “because I have five years of experience as a head chef.” Continue practising verb patterns and sentence phrasing; greater consistency in these areas would help you produce more accurate complex sentences.
