Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my interest in a job opportunity at one of your restaurants, as you suggested during our conversation on a recent flight.
We met on a flight from Toronto to Edmonton last week and were seated next to each other. During the journey, we had a pleasant conversation about your restaurant business. You kindly suggested that I contact you if I was interested in working at one of your restaurants.
I would be particulary interested in applying for a restaurant supervisor or assistant manager position. I believe this role would allow me to use my management skills and customer service experience while contributing to the success of your business.
I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this job because I have previous experience in management and dealing with customers. Also, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, and I can effectviely work in busy environment. I am also responsible, organised, and capable of working well with a team.
I would appreciate it if you could let me know about any suitable vacancies. I would be happy to provide my resume and attend an interview at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you identify the journey and timing (“from Toronto to Edmonton last week”), specify the role you want (“restaurant supervisor or assistant manager”), and explain your suitability through management, customer-service, communication, and teamwork experience. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the polite request for information about vacancies gives the letter an appropriate practical focus. Your reasons are relevant, but they remain somewhat general: for example, you mention management experience without describing a responsibility or achievement that demonstrates it. A brief, concrete example would make the case for your suitability more fully developed and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The information is arranged in a clear, effective sequence: you establish the purpose, remind the recipient where you met, state the role you seek, explain your suitability, and close with a request for next steps. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Also” and “because” make relationships between ideas easy to follow. The opening and closing are appropriately placed and the letter is straightforward to read. To make cohesion even more polished, you could connect the skills more directly to the supervisor role rather than presenting them mainly as a list; for instance, explain how your customer-service experience would help you lead staff or handle busy service periods.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of professional and task-relevant vocabulary, including “express my interest,” “customer service experience,” “suitable vacancies,” and “at your convenience.” These choices maintain an appropriately polite tone. However, the range is not consistently precise, and a few spelling and word-choice slips reduce accuracy: “particulary” and “effectviely” are misspelled, while “work in busy environment” would be more natural as “work in a busy environment.” Some phrases, such as “previous experience in management,” are understandable but broad. Use more specific language about your responsibilities, such as supervising staff or resolving customer concerns, to show greater flexibility and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate, including “I would appreciate it if you could let me know about any suitable vacancies” and “I would be happy to provide my resume and attend an interview at your convenience.” You also handle subordinate clauses and polite conditional phrasing effectively. A few grammatical issues remain, most notably the missing article in “work in busy environment”; write “work in a busy environment.” The sentence beginning “I believe I would be a suitable candidate” is grammatically sound, though several short skill statements rely on a similar pattern. Varying these structures while maintaining accuracy would strengthen the range and control.
