Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Dave,

I am the lady who sat beside you on a recent flight from Lagos to Abuja. I am writing this letter following our last conversation on job vacancies at one of your resturants. You also requested i contact you with my credentials.

On the flight from Lagos to Abuja, you spoke about your chain of resturants .You also mentioned how greatly it has expanded in the last few years. I became highly motivated and decided to make my research on the chain of restaurants. I was highly impressed with the information online.

I see the restaurant as a place I can work at. I will really be grateful if I am given the opportunity to work with you. I previously did a degree on company management and I will definitely be an asset to your restaurant. Company management enables the restaurant to run smoothly without a hitch. It also enables the restaurant to generate sufficient revenue.

I will be suitable for the job because I have 4 years experience on company management with excellent reviews. I am also very dedicated to my job and hardworking

Thank you very much for your time. I hope you consider my request. I will be awaiting your future response.

Yours faithfully,

Osahon Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the flight from Lagos to Abuja, express interest in working at the restaurant, and give relevant reasons for your suitability, including a management degree and four years of experience. The purpose is clear and the details about your research and positive impression add context. However, the job you want is not specified precisely: “a place I can work at” does not identify a role, such as restaurant manager or operations assistant. Your explanation of how company management benefits the restaurant is relevant, but the connection between your experience and the particular job could be developed more fully. State the position you are seeking and give one concrete example of your management experience.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The information is arranged in a generally sensible order: you recall the meeting, discuss your interest, explain your qualifications, and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages. However, the first two paragraphs repeat the flight and the restaurant-chain context, so the progression is not always efficient. The transition from researching the business to saying “I see the restaurant as a place I can work at” is also abrupt. Some links between ideas are mechanical, particularly the repeated “It also enables” sentences. Combine the repeated meeting details and use clearer links to show how your education and experience support the specific role you want.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “credentials,” “expanded,” “dedicated,” and “excellent reviews.” The meaning is generally clear, but some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive. For example, “did a degree on company management” is not a natural way to describe your qualification, and “experience on company management” is also awkward. “I see the restaurant as a place I can work at” is vague, while “highly” is repeated. There are also spelling and capitalization slips, including “resturants” and lowercase “i.” Choose more precise employment vocabulary and check spelling carefully to make the letter sound more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “I will be suitable for the job because I have 4 years experience with excellent reviews.” Most sentences communicate your meaning clearly, and the use of past and present forms is generally understandable. Some errors remain in grammar and punctuation. In “I am writing this letter following our last conversation,” the reference to the conversation would be clearer with a more precise time expression; “I decided to make my research” also reflects an awkward grammatical pattern. There are missing sentence spaces after full stops, and the final sentence about being hardworking lacks terminal punctuation. Review sentence boundaries, capitalization, and article use, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
