Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
Myself Raj and I met you on our flight from New York to Toronto and we were sitting next to each other. I am writing this letter to talk to you about getting the job in one of your restaurants.
I am pretty flexible in doing anything but this time I am particularly applying for the position of the head chef or the restaurant manager.
Having a bachelors degree in Culinary makes me a perfect fit to become a head chef at one of your locations. Adding more, I have completed my MBA in Hotel Management provides me with exceptional qualities to be a responsible manager. Not only this, I also have 3 years of experience of working in a Mexican restaurant in Barrie. Therefore, I am used to the busy environment of the restaurants especially during holidays. Also, I am very patient and can handle critical situations with the help of my problem solving skills.
I hope to hear back from you soon.
Kind regards,
Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three required points: you identify the flight from New York to Toronto, state your interest in head-chef or restaurant-manager work, and support your suitability with culinary and hotel-management qualifications and three years’ experience. These details make your purpose clear and relevant. The explanation of your experience is useful, although the final qualities—patience and problem-solving—are asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example. The opening also does not clearly remind the businessman when you met; adding a time reference, such as “last week,” would complete that detail. Overall, the task is fully addressed, with ideas extended through relevant qualifications and experience, though a little more specific support would strengthen the case.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible progression: it recalls the meeting, states the job interests, explains qualifications and experience, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “Also” make relationships between ideas clear. This provides coherent overall organisation. However, some connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the sequence “Adding more,” “Not only this,” “Therefore,” and “Also.” The sentence beginning “Having a bachelors degree” also runs into the next qualification without a clean grammatical link, which interrupts the flow. To make the progression more flexible, group the qualifications and experience into a smoothly connected paragraph and use fewer, more precise transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “head chef,” “Hotel Management,” “busy environment,” and “problem solving skills.” These communicate your qualifications and suitability clearly. You also attempt more formal expressions, including “exceptional qualities” and “responsible manager,” but some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “I am pretty flexible in doing anything” is vague, and “Adding more” is not an idiomatic way to introduce another point. “Critical situations” is understandable but less natural here than “challenging situations.” These word-choice and collocation issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Choose direct, professional phrasing that describes the role you want and the relevant skills you can offer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Having a bachelors degree in Culinary makes me…” and “I am used to the busy environment… especially during holidays.” The message remains understandable, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical errors are present, however. “Myself Raj” should be “My name is Raj,” while “Having a bachelors degree” needs the possessive form “bachelor’s.” The sentence “I have completed my MBA in Hotel Management provides me…” combines two structures incorrectly; use “My MBA in Hotel Management provides me…” or “Having completed my MBA…, I have…”. There are also article and preposition issues in “experience of working in a Mexican restaurant.” More consistent control of these forms would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
