Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jack,

I am writing this letter to get your referance for one of your job openings at your Toronto location as you mentioned last week while we were travelling from Toronto to Halifax in a same flight. We got into a long conversation about foods, tastes and cuisines when were enjoying our lunches on flight.

As I mentioned in flight, I recently graduated cullinary arts and I am finding job as a chef. While working in a bakery during my college time, I got exposed with cheese and breads that I have developed interest in italian recepies even more. However, I am can cook more than hundread dishes of 5 different cuisines.

At your Toronto location, they are currently looking for chief chef. I perticulary enjoy to cook italian food which makes me best fit for that location as it serves american style italian food. I truly enjoyed your company during that journey and I will really appreciate your help in getting this because this job can change my entire career significantly.

I am hoping to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Pankti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter covers all three required points: you identify the journey from Toronto to Halifax, explain that you are seeking chef work, and give relevant reasons for your suitability, including culinary training and experience in a bakery. The interest in Italian cooking also connects your skills to the restaurant. However, some details are less fully developed or unclear. For example, you say the Toronto branch is looking for a “chief chef,” but do not explain how you learned this or whether you are applying for that specific vacancy. Your suitability would be more convincing with a concrete example of a skill or responsibility from your bakery work. The purpose is clear overall, but a more direct and specific request for an interview or next steps would strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information is arranged in a generally coherent order: you recall the meeting, describe your background, explain your fit for the restaurant, and close politely. The paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As I mentioned” and “However” guide the reader through the message. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. The opening combines the job request and the travel details in a long sentence, while “However” does not clearly signal a contrast between your bakery experience and your cooking ability. The reference to “that location” also relies on the reader inferring which restaurant you mean. Separating the opening into shorter sentences and using clearer links between your experience and the role would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the situation, including “culinary arts,” “cuisines,” “bakery,” and “Italian food,” which helps communicate your background and interests. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing the restaurant’s “American style Italian food.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the message less polished: “referance,” “cullinary,” “recepies,” and “perticulary” should be corrected, and “chief chef” is not the appropriate job title. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “got exposed with cheese and breads” and “finding job as a chef.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise without needing more elaborate words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “While working in a bakery…” and the clause explaining why Italian cooking suits the restaurant. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “when were enjoying our lunches,” the subject “we” is missing; “I recently graduated cullinary arts” needs a grammatical construction such as “graduated in culinary arts”; and “I am can cook” combines incompatible verb forms. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “in a same flight” and “hundread dishes.” To improve, check that each clause has a subject and a correctly formed verb, and review articles and singular/plural forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make the varied sentence structures clearer.
