Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Smith,
I hope your are doing well. I am writing to follow up on our conversation during a recent flight from Toronto to Vancouver, where we were seated next to each other.
During the journey, we discussed your restaurant business and the employment opportunities availabe in your restaurants. You kindly suggested that I contact you if I was interested in joining your team. I appreciated your advice and would like to express my intrest in this opportunity.
I am particularly interested in a position as a restaurant supervisor. I believe this role would allow me to develop my management skills while contributing to the smooth operation of your business. I would also be happy to consider other suitable positions if a supervisory role is currently not available.
I believe I would be a suitable candidate because I am hardworking, organised, and capable of communicationg effectively with people. I am also willing to learn new skills, work as part of team and take responsibility for my duties. I am confident that my positive attitude and commitment would make me a valuable member of your staff.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you.
Your sincerely,
Harsh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you identify the flight from Toronto to Vancouver, state your interest in a restaurant supervisor position, and explain your suitability through qualities such as being hardworking, organised, and willing to learn. The request is clear and remains appropriate for a prospective employer. Your reasons are relevant, and the offer to consider other roles adds flexibility. To strengthen the response further, make the suitability evidence more specific: for example, mention any previous customer-service, team-leading, or restaurant experience rather than relying mainly on general personal qualities. Also, “recent flight” could be made more precise if you remember when it took place.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: opening and reminder of the meeting, reference to the earlier discussion, the role sought, reasons for suitability, and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “During the journey,” “I am particularly interested,” and “I believe” help guide the reader. The ideas are easy to follow, with no distracting shifts in topic. To make the flow more polished, avoid repeating “I believe” at the start of adjacent paragraphs, and connect your personal qualities more directly to the supervisor role—for instance, explain how communication skills would help you support staff or customers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal job enquiry and includes useful task-specific expressions such as “restaurant supervisor,” “smooth operation,” “suitable positions,” and “valuable member of your staff.” The tone is generally professional, and the meaning remains clear. However, some wording is broad or repetitive, particularly “hardworking,” “positive attitude,” and “commitment,” which could be replaced or supported with more precise language about relevant experience. There are also spelling errors in “availabe,” “intrest,” and “communicationg,” which reduce accuracy. Aim to check spelling carefully and use more specific employment vocabulary, such as describing customer-service experience, staff coordination, or handling daily operations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the relative clause “where we were seated next to each other” and the conditional phrase “if a supervisory role is currently not available.” Many sentences are accurate and the message is consistently understandable. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain: “I hope your are doing well” should be “I hope you are doing well”; “as part of team” needs an article (“as part of a team”); and “Your sincerely” should be “Yours sincerely.” There is also a missing space after the full stop in “restaurants.You.” Proofreading these details would improve control while preserving the clear range of sentence forms already shown.
