Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in joining your one of the restaurants in California.

My name is Riya, we met couple of weeks ago on a flight travelling from london to California. I was sitting next to you at that flight. We talked a lot about life interests, jobs, career choices where mentioned about your restaurants chains in all over the world.

You advised me to contact you for job requirements if i need. Additionally,I recently saw a job vacancy posting of a Marketing Head at indeed about your local Cali restaurant. I am really interested in it and had applied online too.

It would be great if you consider my application and give a fair chance to be interviewed. Although, I have a 4 years of experienece in Marketing field and has good communication with other vendors. Moreover, I have good connection with few big suppliers like McCan, DR. Oetkar and Friska who can provide good quality of patties and fries at best prices. Consequently, this will benefit in cost cutting.

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

yours truly,

Ri

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you remind the businessman that you met on a flight from London to California, identify your interest in the Marketing Head vacancy, and explain your marketing experience and supplier contacts. These details make your suitability relevant and give the letter a clear purpose. The explanation of how your supplier connections could reduce costs is a useful supporting point. To make the response stronger, develop your experience with a specific achievement or example, and clarify whether you are following up on the online application or seeking an interview. The opening and closing are appropriate, though using the recipient’s name, if known, would make the letter more personal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: you introduce your purpose, recall the meeting, describe the vacancy, and then explain your qualifications before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Additionally” and “Moreover” signal added information. The progression is generally clear, but some connections feel mechanical, particularly the sequence of “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “Consequently.” The sentence beginning “My name is Riya” also combines your introduction and the meeting details in a way that makes the relationship between ideas less smooth. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary how you link supporting points. The final request for an interview could also connect more directly to your stated experience.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a job enquiry, including “job vacancy,” “Marketing Head,” “suppliers,” and “cost cutting.” These terms help communicate your interest and the practical value you could bring. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, such as “joining your one of the restaurants,” “job requirements,” and “good communication with other vendors.” Some spelling and capitalization slips, including “experienece,” “london,” and “i,” also reduce the overall control of written vocabulary. Aim for natural professional collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe your experience as being “in marketing” and your supplier relationships as “strong professional connections.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional idea “if you consider my application” and the relative clause “who can provide good quality…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For instance, “My name is Riya, we met…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, while “I have a 4 years of experienece … and has” has problems with the article, plural form, and subject–verb agreement. “Looking forward to hear from you” also needs a gerund after “to.” Practise proofreading each sentence for a complete clause and consistent subject–verb forms, while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
