Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

Hope you are doing well.I am writing to talk about the job in your restaurant.Last saturday I met you in my plane journey to Edmonton, where you sat beside me . We talked and you told me about your chain of restaurants as well as you offered me job in one of your restaurant.

Recently,in Edmonton,I live alone alone and need a job for my expenses. I am a student so job helps me manage my college fee and other expenses. If restaurant needs the sever I do have 2 years of experience in my back home of restaurants. This job might help me continue my field in management ,somehow my study is also related to that too.

I am studying in hotel management where I learn how to be multitasking , how to manage the arrangements, how to deal with the customers. This study and my experience allow me to be fit for work in your restaurants.I hope you will consider my request and if hiring happens let me know I will apply for the job as soon as possible.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours Faithfully,

Yashreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you remind the businessman that you met on the flight to Edmonton, identify restaurant work as your goal, and explain your hotel-management studies and two years of restaurant experience. These details make the letter relevant and show a clear purpose. The suitability explanation is the strongest part, although some points are asserted rather than fully connected to the role—for example, explain how your customer-service experience or management training would benefit his restaurants. The request is also slightly unclear: “if hiring happens let me know” could be made more direct and professional. The response covers the task well overall, with some ideas developed more fully than others; extending the reasons for your suitability would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens by referring to the meeting, moves to your circumstances and job interest, then gives reasons you are suitable before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages. However, some connections between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For instance, “Recently, in Edmonton, I live alone alone and need a job” shifts from the meeting to your personal circumstances without a smooth link, and the repeated “alone” is distracting. The long sentence beginning “I hope you will consider my request” combines several purposes without clear separation. Use more precise transitions and divide related points into shorter sentences to make the progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “chain of restaurants,” “hotel management,” “experience,” and “customers.” Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural for a formal job enquiry. “The sever” does not clearly express the role you want, while “in my back home of restaurants” is difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “continue my field in management” and “if hiring happens” also sound awkward. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your purpose, but they limit precision and naturalness. Choose a specific position, such as server, and use conventional expressions for experience and career interests. Check spelling and word forms, including “Saturday” and “server.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical and punctuation errors are noticeable, however. In “Hope you are doing well.I am writing,” a space is missing after the full stop, and “Last saturday I met you in my plane journey” has problems with the article and preposition. The sentence “If restaurant needs the sever I do have 2 years…” also needs clearer clause structure and punctuation. There are some errors with articles, sentence boundaries, and phrasing, but they rarely obscure the intended meaning. To improve, use a reliable pattern for complex sentences, check articles and prepositions, and separate complete ideas with full stops or commas.
