Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to follow up on a conversation we had last week in our flight from Montreal to Toronto. We were sitting next to each other and had great interaction. I was very motivated by the struggles you shared and by how brilliantly you handled various situations, starting from a small cafe to a restaurant and now running a chain. You also suggested that I reach out to you regarding employment opportunities.

I would be highly interested in applying for a position of assistant restaurant manager. I have always enjoyed working in a customer-facing job, where I could interact with people and enhance my managing skills. I believe this role would give a great opportunity to increase my organizational skills.

I would also like to share my experience regarding the post. I have been working as assistant store manager at walmart from past 1 year and prior to that I had wroked in customer enquiry department for 3 years. My job mainly involved resolving customer issues and coordinating daily operations. As a store manager, I always kept track of the inventory section along with managing the other respective divisions. I am good communicator and have worked as a problem solver in many critical situations.

It would be greatful if you could help me to know about suitable job opportunities that could match my skill set. I would be happy to attend an interview at your convenience.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points clearly: you identify the flight from Montreal to Toronto last week, specify an assistant restaurant manager role, and explain your suitability through customer-service and store-management experience. The examples of resolving customer issues, coordinating operations and monitoring inventory give the employer relevant evidence, and the polite request for information and an interview is appropriate. The account of your experience is more developed than the explanation of why you want this particular role; for example, “increase my organizational skills” focuses on what you hope to gain rather than what you can contribute. To strengthen the letter further, connect your management experience directly to the needs of a restaurant and make the benefit you would bring more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, sensible sequence: you recall the meeting, state the role you want, present your experience, and close with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “prior to that” and “It would be great” support the progression. Some connections could be more precise: “I would also like to share my experience regarding the post” is a rather mechanical transition, and “As a store manager” is unclear because you previously describe yourself as an assistant store manager. The closing also has two similar expressions of thanks and anticipation. Use more direct transitions and ensure references to your position remain consistent to make the organisation feel more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal employment enquiry, including relevant terms such as “customer-facing,” “coordinating daily operations,” “inventory” and “skill set.” These help communicate your background and the type of work you seek. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “great interaction,” “increase my organizational skills” and “help me to know about suitable job opportunities.” There are also spelling errors in “wroked” and “greatful,” and “customer enquiry department” may not be the clearest description of your previous role. Aim for more natural professional phrasing and check spelling carefully; this would make your message sound more polished without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, such as the sentence describing your duties and the clause beginning “where I could interact with people.” Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “from past 1 year” needs an article and a more suitable time expression, while “I am good communicator” is missing an article. The phrase “I would be highly interested in applying for a position of assistant restaurant manager” also needs an article before the job title. In the closing, “Your sincerely” is not grammatically correct. Review articles, prepositions in time expressions, and conventional letter-closing forms, then proofread each sentence for these recurring issues.
