Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing a letter about job opportunity we discussed last week while travelling a flight from Vancouver to Toronto.
Last week we met on a plane and start our conversation on job opportunity. You told me that you have a chain of restaurants and I contact to you for a work at your one restaurant.
I am interested in working as a waiter in one of your restaurant as well as also applied for a suitable position if it is available for kitchen assistant.
Moreover, this job would be suitable for me as I am hardworking, friendly as well as responsible person regarding my job. I enjoy meeting with new people which enhance my communication skills more. Additionally, I am good to work under pressure and learn new things quickly.
I would be thankful to you if you would hire me for a suitable job.
Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you identify the journey from Vancouver to Toronto, express interest in waiter or kitchen-assistant work, and give relevant qualities such as being hardworking, friendly, and able to work under pressure. The purpose is clear and appropriate for a job enquiry. However, some details are less fully developed: the meeting is only located as “last week” on a plane, and your suitability claims would be more convincing with a brief example of relevant experience or a specific skill connected to restaurant work. The request for employment is also quite general. Adding a little more precise information about your experience and preferred role would make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you open with the reason for writing, recall the conversation, state the roles you would consider, and explain your suitability before closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Additionally” show how your points relate. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some ability to connect ideas. To make the progression more natural, avoid repeating “Last week” in consecutive paragraphs and use transitions that reflect the relationship between ideas rather than adding another point mechanically. The sentence about applying for a waiter role and a kitchen-assistant position could also be divided or clarified so the two options are easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the purpose and relevant personal qualities, including “hardworking,” “responsible,” “communication skills,” and “under pressure.” The wording is generally understandable, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural for a formal job enquiry. For example, “travelling a flight” and “I contact to you” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “a suitable position” is vague. These choices keep the letter from showing more flexible and precise vocabulary. Aim to learn common collocations for travel, employment, and applications, and choose specific terms that describe your experience or strengths in a restaurant setting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I am hardworking” and the relative clause in “which enhance my communication skills.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For instance, “we met on a plane and start our conversation” needs consistent past-tense verbs, and “one of your restaurant” requires a plural noun or a different article structure. In “I am writing a letter about job opportunity,” an article is also needed before “job opportunity.” Check tense consistency when describing past events, and proofread subject–verb agreement and articles to improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
