Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is widely acknowledged that in numerous places, new homes are needed to accommodate people but space is only available in the rural areas. Some individuals are of the view that new homes should not be built to protect the countryside areas. In my perspective, the government needs to protect countryside as it offers long-term benefits to save the environment.

To commence with, the main reason why rural areas need to be protected is to save the environment. If construction begins in wild-life areas, then species will not have space to live. As a result, they will start becoming extinct. For instance, it has been a headline in many newspapers that many wild animals often visit villages. In forests there is only limited area left, which is not enough for all the living species. As a result, in search of food they sometimes come to village areas and kill pat animal such as cow and dog. Hence, it is a crucial to not disturb their living area.

Furthermore, farmers are mostly dependent on farming lands to cover their living expenses. If it is occupied by construction, then they will have to find another job, which requires extra efforts. Similarly, the government also has to import raw food items from other countries, which will not only lead to higher prices of essential items of daily life but will also affect the nation's economy. For example, India has to import rice at a higher price from China because there is no suitable land left for rice to grow.

To sum up, rural areas play a vital role to save the environment and help nations to maintain goods prices; however, the government can replace low-rise buildings to high-rise buildings to overcome crisis of new homes to accommodate citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for protecting the countryside, such as environmental preservation and the economic impact on farming. The ideas are extended with examples, such as the mention of wildlife encroachment and the agricultural situation in India. However, the development could be more nuanced; for instance, the suggestion to replace low-rise buildings with high-rise buildings is a good practical solution, but it is introduced only in the conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that such solutions are integrated into the body paragraphs to provide a more balanced discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the environmental argument and the economic argument could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accommodate', 'extinct', 'encroachment' (implied), and 'essential items'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'pat animal' (likely meaning 'pet' or 'livestock') and 'goods prices' (which should be 'food prices' or 'cost of living'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences ('If construction begins... then species will not have space'). While there are frequent error-free sentences, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'it is a crucial to not disturb' (should be 'it is crucial not to disturb') and 'cow and dog' (should be plural 'cows and dogs'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of articles and pluralization to reach a higher band.
