Student answer (Band 6.5)

A growing population in the cities increase the demands of new accommodation. However, for building a new home, space is available is only in the countryside. Some people think that individuals have to protect the rural areas and try to find other alternatives in order to fulfil the needs of community. Therefore, I partially agree with both views.

On the one hand, using countryside space for construction of new homes brings tremendous benefits to the people and the society. Firstly, living in a natural environment allows the city people to explore breath-taking view of nature, get relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy peaceful living weather after long working time in the office. Over time, it will improve their mental and physical health as well as productivity. Apart from that, increase the building process of new houses in the countryside creates employment opportunities and boosts the economy of individual areas.

On the other hand, it is governments responsibility to protect the rural areas for the future generations and mitigate the chances of air, noise and water pollution. For instance, a rising number of residents in the countryside places the pressure on the resources like, food, transportation, health care and education. Therefore, it would be challenging for the authorities to combat the situation. A number of builders convert agricultural land into unfertile land for building new homes, as a result, it will makes the farmers unemployed and reduced amount of foods for the society. Hence, governments have to construct high-rise apartments and buildings to the community in urban areas and conserve the natural environment in the village.

In conclusion, a rising needs of the new homes promote the people to use countryside space and live healthy and slow-paced life and improve their overall wellbeing. However, it could be contaminate air, water and produce noise, sometimes damage the farmland and places the burden on the natural resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is partially in agreement with both sides. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of nature for mental health and the economic impact of construction. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the link between building homes and the specific economic boost to individual areas could be more clearly explained. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it repeats some of the language used in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Apart from that', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing, such as in the sentence 'it will makes the farmers unemployed', where the pronoun 'it' does not clearly refer back to a specific antecedent. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including phrases like 'hustle and bustle', 'mitigate the chances', and 'conserve the natural environment'. There are some instances of awkward collocation or word choice, such as 'enjoy peaceful living weather' (likely meaning 'lifestyle') and 'it could be contaminate air' (grammatical error affecting lexical precision). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher band scores. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range of expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'A growing population in the cities increase' (subject-verb agreement), 'it will makes the farmers' (incorrect verb form), and 'a rising needs' (article usage). Additionally, punctuation is occasionally inconsistent. While the student attempts complex structures, these are often where the errors occur. However, these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and modal verbs.
