Student answer (Band 6.0)

New homes are needed to be build in so many places but the biggest issue is that the only land to build them is available in the countryside. A large number of people claims that saving the countryside is important than building new houses. I agree that protecting our environment is essential. My essay aims as discussing both viewpoints and giving reasons behind my preference.

On the one hand, the most prominent point is growing population is becoming the biggest reason of shortage of houses in the world. To be more precise, more the population is growing more the houses are required to have better lifestyle. As a result, governing authorities are forced to build more houses. Additionally, due to growth in industrial, food and other sectors more places are required for different aspects which leads the housing problem to grow day by day.

On the other hand, saving the countryside areas is very crucial as it helps to save our environment. To elaborate it, if we keep building houses in rural areas by cutting trees and forests it can lead to big issues in environment for example the oxygen levels can drop and environment can get polluted. Apart from this, constructing the houses or industries in the countryside disturbs wildlife habitat which results in extinction of some species causing disturbance in food chain cycle.

In conclusion, Although houses are important for extraordinary lifestyle but I believe that government should think of other ways to reduce problem of shortage of houses for example particular designing or rebuilding of current houses to save land and environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by acknowledging the need for housing and the importance of protecting the countryside. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention both sides, the arguments regarding population growth and environmental impact are quite general and could benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis. You clearly state your position in the introduction and conclusion, which is a strength. To improve, ensure that your supporting ideas are fully extended rather than just stated. For instance, instead of just mentioning 'oxygen levels,' you could explain the long-term impact on urban air quality or public health to provide a more compelling argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as 'To be more precise' and 'To elaborate it.' The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the connection between ideas could be smoother. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this,' 'these') is used more precisely to link ideas across sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'wildlife habitat,' 'extinction,' and 'governing authorities.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'needed to be build' (should be 'built') and 'extraordinary lifestyle' (which sounds unnatural in this context). To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to replace general terms like 'big issues' or 'better lifestyle.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles, such as 'more the population is growing more the houses are required' (should be 'the more the population grows, the more houses are required') and 'in environment' (should be 'in the environment'). These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and practice more complex sentence patterns like conditional clauses or relative clauses to increase your grammatical range.
