Student answer (Band 6.5)

In most of the places, new homes are required but the spaces to build them are only available at the countryside. Few people think it is important to protect these areas rather than building new homes. I agree with this statement.

Firstly, it is necessary to protect the flora and the fauna present at the rural places. The reason is to protect the biodiversity present which makes places like these heaven. Not only this, along with it the practice of farming should be protected. If there are no farms available to provide humans the food they need, then how will the living creatures on the Earth even stay alive?. People need nutrition which comes from food to stay healthy and active. For example, there are a lot of farms present in different parts of India which provides different variety of foods like pulses, vegetables and fruits.

Secondly, there is a reason why countryside place exists. To maintain the difference between the rural and urban areas in the countries all across the world, they need to stay separated. This should stay as it is in order to maintain the peace a countryside has which is generally not found in the cities. People like to stay and visit quiet places so that they can enjoy peace. For instance, Pemberton is a place near Vancouver, which is a countryside. People from all around the world visit this area.

If individuals started to build homes in the rural areas as well, then there will be no differentiation left anywhere.

In conclusion, however places are needed for humans to live, they should also maintain the countryside places by avoiding building new homes over there.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of protecting the countryside. The ideas are relevant, focusing on biodiversity, food security, and the preservation of rural character. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding food security is a strong point, but the explanation could be more sophisticated. The example of India is relevant, but the connection between building homes and the total loss of food production could be more nuanced. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task, but the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a fully developed one.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'Not only this, along with it the practice of farming should be protected' is somewhat clunky. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the logical progression feels a bit repetitive, particularly in the conclusion, which restates the main point without adding significant synthesis. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'biodiversity' and 'differentiation'. However, there are also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'at the countryside' (should be 'in the countryside') and 'countryside place' (should be 'rural area'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. The repetition of basic terms like 'places' and 'stay' limits the overall lexical sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'In most of the places' (should be 'In most places'), 'the practice of farming should be protected' (passive voice is fine, but the preceding clause is awkward), and 'how will the living creatures on the Earth even stay alive?'. Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is present but not entirely consistent.
