Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern age, there has been an uprising demand of new homes that need to be built. Even though the only space available for building, these houses is in the countryside, whereas some people believe that the countryside is the place that needs to be protected for the future generation and for the environment.

In my perspective, even though countryside is the place that needs to be protected with the building of new houses. The countries that will be developed as well along with the cities and new amenities will be provided over there, which will help in the growth of the civilization as well as the community itself .

Let’s check an example from my home country back in India there’s a town called TARANTARAN which is a countryside area near my city Amritsar. Earlier the area was not that much developed, but due to the rise in demand for multiple houses the city decided to develop the area building new building new houses for the people which especially raised the economy of that countryside while providing it with new amenities, such as hospitals, supermarkets, better commuting, and better standards of living.

I understand that protecting the environment and countryside is crucial so that the coming generations know what the traditions were and the culture of the place but while maintaining, we also need to focus the rising demand of civilization and we have to adapt accordingly while keeping in mind the value that the countryside brings to the table and making sure that the culture is not harmed in any way during the progress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You argue that development is necessary for economic growth and improved amenities, while acknowledging the need to preserve culture. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example of the town in India is relevant, but the explanation of how this balances environmental protection is thin. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'how'—specifically, how modern planning can mitigate the loss of countryside while building homes. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments could be more nuanced and detailed to fully explore the tension between development and conservation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In my perspective' and 'For instance', to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical or slightly disjointed, particularly in the second paragraph where the sentence structure is fragmented. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some transitions could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument, but more sophisticated linking words would enhance the cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'amenities', 'civilization', and 'standards of living' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'uprising demand' (should be 'rising' or 'increasing') and 'Let’s check an example' (which is too informal for an essay). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and the phrasing is occasionally repetitive. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal conversational markers to maintain a more academic tone throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the only space available for building, these houses is in the countryside' and 'building new building new houses'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and misplaced commas. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct subordination and punctuation.
