Student answer (Band 6.5)

The need of shelter is a part of basic necessities of life. Polpulation growth is a major factor to increase the demand of houses. To fulfil this need, the only space available is countryside. People believe that those areas need to stay away from urban lifestyle. In my opinion, society should go with the demand, if there is need to build new homes in rural areas, it should be promoted.

At first glance, people think that there is no need to intrupt rural lifestyle for general need. That area is natural and should be kept away from the hustle of today's generation. Additionally, building new houses and installing new infrastructure is way more costly in pastoral lands. The travel time to the mega cities will also increase. Hence, it is not a good choice to invest money in these kind of projects.

In my opinion, rural areas are important part of the countries. Those areas represent culture and nature of a nation. Farmlands, have equal rights to be developed, and there are no reasons to keep them backward and away from the facilities available in urban areas. Nature can be protected alongside development. If there will be new infrastructure in rural areas, people who like calm places, would like to settle there. By the time, thses areas will become woth of living for many people. It could become tourist place too. The main problem of housing can easily be solved by this step. Nowadays, downtown and megacities have been overlycrowded and to control this, people need to move countryside. For and instance, Canada have launched new pathways to get Permanent Residency in rural areas.

To conclude, people want to keep rural areas safe from counties rush and don't want to interupt the lifestyle there, but I believe development is needed in all areas. If it can help people in any way, there should be no objection to opt these methods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the problem of housing shortages, acknowledging the arguments for protecting the countryside, and clearly stating a personal opinion that rural development should be promoted. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning infrastructure, tourism, and overcrowding in megacities, and even providing a specific example regarding Canada. However, some ideas feel slightly brief or general, which places this response comfortably at Band 6.5 to 7. Descriptors for Band 7 are met as all parts are addressed with a clear position, though there is a tendency to over-generalise in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views and the writer's stance, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'At first glance', 'Additionally', 'Hence', and 'To conclude' are used to structure the ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently. Referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical transitions can be noticed, keeping the cohesion from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the essay flows quite logically from one point to the next, fulfilling the Band 6.5 to 7 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'overcrowded', 'pastoral lands', and 'Permanent Residency'. There are, however, several word-choice, spelling, and morphological errors throughout the text, including 'Polpulation' instead of population, 'intrupt' instead of interrupt, 'thses' instead of these, 'woth' instead of worth, and 'opt these methods' instead of adopt. Despite these errors, the lexical range is adequate and communication is never impeded. These characteristics correspond closely to the Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional and dependent clauses, such as 'If there is need to build new homes in rural areas, it should be promoted.' There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('The need of shelter' should be 'The need for shelter', 'Canada have' should be 'Canada has'), preposition errors ('in these kind of projects' should be 'in this kind of project'), and comma splices. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
