IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many places, new homes are needed, but the only space available for building them is in the countryside. Some people believe it is more important to protect the countryside and not build new homes there.

Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, due to increased population, it has become almost impossible to find space to build new houses in the cities hence people are constructing new houses in the outskirts of the cities but according to some environmnetalists and animal lovers, this has become a serious issue which need to be stopped. I personally believe in the era or sustainability, humans can coexist with the nature and build their accomodation acordingly.
People who have concerns about the future of wildlife have come up with the argument that human interference affects wildlife on a serious level and if it is not stopped, we would not leave space for the wild animals. For instance, Google's data of the past decade shows that due to extensive construction happening in the countryside, over 20% of the wild animals have migrated and some of them are about on the edge of extinction too.
Furthermore, construction requires acres of land which is achieved by cutting thousands of trees that ultimately results in global warming. For example, recent studies from the scientists suggest that in the late 20th century, golabal temperature used to rise only 1 degree celcius but in 21st century is has doubled which results in longer summers, shorter winters and rising water levels too.
In conclusion, I would like to opine that this is the era of technology. If we want, we can solve this problem as well by designing environmnetal friendly housing where humans co-exist with flaura and fauna as they have equal rights to live and thrive too.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the dilemma of building in the countryside versus protecting wildlife and nature. The writer presents a clear position from the beginning—that humans can coexist with nature through sustainable housing design—and maintains this perspective throughout. Ideas are supported with examples, such as mentioning Google's data regarding wildlife migration and scientific studies on global temperature rises. However, some of these examples are generalised and lack specific empirical depth, which places the development at Band 6 or 7. All parts of the task are addressed, and the argument is extended reasonably well in the body paragraphs, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement divided into four distinct paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Progression is visible as the writer moves from the introduction of the problem to wildlife concerns, environmental impacts, and finally a technological solution. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion', to signal transitions between ideas. However, referencing and transitional flow are occasionally mechanical, and the introduction runs on as a single long, complex sentence without sufficient internal punctuation, causing slight bumps in readability. Overall, the organizational structure is logical and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'sustainability', 'extinction', 'global warming', and 'coexist'. There are, however, noticeable spelling errors and awkward word choices ('environmnetal', 'accomodation', 'acordingly', 'golabal', 'celcius', 'flaura'), which detract from precision. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in spelling and occasional lexical slips are present. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, but the presence of recurring spelling mistakes prevents the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('If we want, we can solve this problem as well by designing...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('issue which need to be stopped', 'in 21st century is has doubled') and missing articles. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the meaning remains clear to the reader. The control of grammar is sufficient to handle complex ideas, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.
