Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the advancements in technology, needs related to accommodation are growing but there is a debate on the space, should we consider the countryside to make new residentials or choose some other alternatives. I believe the latter statement, that suggests it is vital to protect the countryside, will provide more benefits in the long run.

The first and foremost reason for preserving our countryside area is that the amount of food production we consume can not be neglected. These areas are typically designated for growing crops, vegetables, fruits and farming practices. Although nowadays it is easily accessible to buy produce from supermarkets, the main source of production cannot be halted. For instance, companies are now taking place of fresh produce by providing frozen and packaged food to ensure the ease of citizens. However, this approach has devastating effects that cause health-related implications.

Another possible scenario is that people have survival on these countryside areas by working in the fields. There are several indigenous communities who still work in the farmlands to earn their bread and butter. Using these countryside spaces to build new homes will directly affect their livelihood and the fresh produce that we receive. Moreover, this complexity would be punishable if these talented and skilled individuals leave the country in search of a countryside area at some other place.

In light of the above discussion, I believe that shelter is a pivotal pillar for humans, but to ensure healthy living, the countryside should not be considered for conversion to build residential plots, factories, or buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, arguing in favour of protecting the countryside. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as the importance of food production and the livelihoods of indigenous farming communities. However, some arguments lack full development or slip into minor irrelevance, such as the claim that building homes in rural areas would cause skilled individuals to leave the country. Despite these slight leaps in logic, the main tenets of the prompt are satisfactorily covered, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as food production and rural livelihoods. Cohesive devices are generally present, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as 'Another possible scenario is that...' when discussing livelihoods. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional clunky phrasing impacts the overall flow. Progression is visible throughout, placing the text firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'indigenous communities', 'devastating effects', and 'pivotal pillar'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors that detract from precision, such as 'make new residentials', 'the amount of food production we consume can not be neglected', and 'people have survival on these countryside areas'. While these errors occasionally cause minor confusion, communication is not severely impeded, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, a number of grammatical errors and awkward structures persist throughout the text, such as 'needs related to accommodation are growing but there is a debate on the space, should we consider...' and 'this complexity would be punishable if...'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a Band 7.0. The mix of structures with manageable error frequency comfortably secures a Band 6.0.
