Student answer (Band 6.0)

New houses are needed in different regions, countryside is the only space that can be used for construction though. Some people's thought that countryside should be protected instead of building houses on it. I would go with the second opinion.

To start with, countryside area should be conserved as it is our food basket. Mainly farmers grow various crops in that area which later on are used by us to meet our basic needs of food, cloth and shelter. For instance, flour we make bread from, comes from wheat, rice or maize, and clothes we put on are produced from cotton, that comes from cotton plant.

Moreover, countryside space is the home of many birds and animals which build shelter on the trees and have their meal from green fields. So, animals, birds and even human beings will not survive by the lack of food materials and shelter,if those spaces are destroyed .

However, the roadside environment is the natural space, the beauty of which calms our mind and a morning walk in that surrounding helps us stay healthy and fit. Moving further, making new homes on the countryside will imbalance the ecosystem. As the rainfalls will be decreased due to deforestation and global warming from the house heating.

To conclude, houses are also a basic need of each individual, but it is also cruicial to save countryside region because we need space for crops. There are many places having very old buildings which needs reconstruction or the garbage spots that needs proper cleaning before use. Those should be considered first before countryside.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by clearly stating a position that the countryside should be protected and presenting arguments to support this view. The writer considers the agricultural importance of rural areas, the impact on wildlife habitats, and the environmental benefits of green spaces, concluding with an alternative suggestion to reuse urban brownfield sites. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and relies on straightforward points without deep elaboration. For instance, the discussion on ecosystems and global warming touches upon relevant themes but remains brief. The position is maintained throughout the essay, fulfilling the basic requirements of the prompt and adequately covering all parts of the task, earning a solid band 6.0 according to the descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as food production in the second paragraph, animal habitats in the third, and environmental impacts in the fourth. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or awkward, as seen with phrases like "To start with," "Moving further," and repetitive transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother to avoid abrupt shifts between points. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as "agriculture," "ecosystem," "deforestation," and "global warming." However, there are noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors, such as "clothes we put on" instead of "clothes we wear," "meal" instead of "food," and "cruicial" (spelling error). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but word choices are occasionally unnatural or imprecise. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, fitting the descriptors for band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures frequently contain errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include "Some people's thought that" instead of "Some people think that," "animal, birds and even human beings will not survive by the lack of food" (preposition error), and "There are many places having very old buildings which needs reconstruction" (subject-verb agreement error with 'needs'). Punctuation and article errors also occur throughout the text. While these errors are noticeable and require some effort from the reader, they do not completely impede communication, aligning well with the band 5.5 descriptors.
