Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate over whether new houses should be build on countryside or not.

In my opinion, it is now necessary to meet the needs of over-growing population so new houses should be build whether it involves building in the countryside.

In recent years, a major rise in population has been seen. Therefore, the need of new residential areas increased to meet this demand. There was also a need to have new commertial buildings as well hospitals. All these developments resulted in cities expansion and involving the countryside. For example, my hometown was just a small area surrounded by agricultural lands but now it has turned into a big city. This expansion created opportunities for many people including employment and educational institutes. Therefore this development played a key role in the success of community.

On the other hand there are some people who believe that countryside protection is more important than building new homes. Their point of view is valid at some extent but practically, it is not applicable. The reason is that new houses are needed and the only space left is countryside. Therefore, no option available to negogiate this problem. Moreover, it is also important in terms of developmental aspects, new places are needed so that more people can work to boost the economy of that area.

In conclusion, I support building of new houses to accommodate more people because it is inevitiable. However there should be some rules and regulations for builders so that nature can be protected as much as possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, acknowledging the conflict between urban expansion and protecting the countryside. The main arguments are relevant and supported by a personal example regarding the writer's hometown. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the point about economic benefits is raised briefly without much extension. To move closer to a higher band, the ideas would need more thorough expansion with deeper justification and broader supporting examples rather than relying on a single brief personal anecdote.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct perspective. Cohesive devices such as 'In recent years', 'For example', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the argument. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical, and certain cohesive links between sentences feel slightly repetitive. Greater flexibility and smoothness in transitions would elevate the organizational control.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and topic-specific terms like 'residential areas', 'commercial buildings', and 'agricultural lands'. However, there are notable spelling errors such as 'commertial', 'negogiate', and 'inevitiable', along with word choice inaccuracies like saying 'building on countryside' rather than 'in the countryside'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing control over lexical precision and spelling, placing the writing firmly in this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures with devices like relative clauses and conditional-like framing. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including passive voice construction errors like 'should be build' instead of 'built', prepositional slips such as 'at some extent' instead of 'to some extent', missing articles, and awkward phrasing such as 'no option available to negogiate this problem'. These errors occur regularly and represent the characteristic pattern of persistent mistakes mixed with functional sentence patterns at this level.
