Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on building on the countryside versus protecting it, and it outlines relevant ideas such as economic benefits, agricultural impacts, and urban housing alternatives. However, some ideas are under-developed or remain somewhat generalized. For instance, the discussion regarding the disruption of the food chain and the reliance on international food is introduced but lacks full extension and specific supporting examples. The higher band attributes of fully developed ideas and well-supported arguments are partially visible in the suggestion of high vertical housing modes, but overall, the depth of task coverage keeps the response balanced between the addressed criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Progression is visible as the writer transitions from economic and agricultural concerns to environmental impacts and alternative solutions. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Linkers and referencing are occasionally awkward, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences and the repetitive use of connective elements. Paragraphing is utilized to separate main ideas, but referencing within and between sentences is not always completely clear, occasionally requiring the reader to work harder to follow the logical links between arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to discuss the topic of urban expansion and countryside protection. The writer attempts some less-common vocabulary, such as 'natural habitats', 'agriculture land', and 'vertical housing', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'urben', 'concreat', 'diminise', 'destripute', and 'collespe'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score, preventing the response from reaching a higher band where a wider and more accurate range of lexical items is demonstrated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple and attempted complex sentences. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, featuring persistent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and pluralisation, such as 'segment of society', 'to built', 'number of urben cities are', and 'Domestic farmer loose there farming land'. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer shows some control over basic sentence construction, but the density of structural and grammatical inaccuracies prevents the attainment of a higher band descriptor.
