IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many places, new homes are needed, but the only space available for building them is in the countryside. Some people believe it is more important to protect the countryside and not build new homes there.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people may argue that countryside should be protected, but considering the rapidly expanding populations it is wise to build homes there as well.
On one hand, countrysides are like the fingerprint of any country and offer a unique combination of weather, soil, foliage and zoology. Specifically the lush green areas and the forests also have great role in environment and climate control, besides beautification. Moreover the mature forests can also provide wide variety of fruits and food for animals as well as humans.
On the other hand, increasing population needs have already forced large cities into building multi storeyed residential towers and accomodating them is becoming more challenging day by day. Its easier to build a home on empty land than to build it atop another. Additionally, living in a highly compact apartment strips of personal privacy and freedom. There can be constant influence of the hustle and bustle of daily city life which can be irritating often times. Living on the countryside provides a calm and steady lifestyle according to one's own pace. Some people, specifically the older ones, may find the countryside life more comfortable and closer to nature's time.
In conclusion, I believe the goverment should take significant steps for the conservation of countryside while on the other hand providing guidelines for the development authorities to optimize land utilization and people accomodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you support building homes in the countryside when population growth makes this necessary, while also arguing for conservation. You address both sides with relevant points, including the environmental value of forests and the pressures of crowded city apartments. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that countryside living suits older people is not supported with a specific reason or example, and the benefits of building homes outside cities are not weighed carefully against the environmental costs. The conclusion proposes guidelines and better land use, but does not clarify what balance you would prioritise. The response is also below the required 250 words, so there is limited space to develop these points. Add a concrete example and explain how development could be restricted to less sensitive land.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an opening position, two contrasting body paragraphs introduced by “On one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. The ideas within each paragraph are generally related, and the reader can follow the shift from environmental protection to housing needs. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some stronger progression. To make the links more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on broad signposts such as “Moreover” and “Additionally.” The first paragraph moves from scenery to climate and then food without explaining how these points connect to the central question. Also, “them” in “accommodating them” has an unclear reference. Use clearer links and make each paragraph build a focused argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “rapidly expanding populations,” “climate control,” “compact apartment,” and “land utilization.” There are also attempts at less common or vivid language, such as “the fingerprint of any country” and “hustle and bustle.” Some choices, however, are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “countrysides” is not the usual form here, “zoology” does not mean wildlife, and “strips of personal privacy” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “accomodating” and “goverment” are noticeable, though the meaning remains clear. Aim for precise topic vocabulary and check spelling; for example, use “wildlife” and “accommodating” in this context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concessive opening (“Some people may argue … but …”) and longer sentences with “while” and “which.” Meaning is generally clear, and the errors do not usually prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. Articles are missing in “countryside should be protected” and “have great role”; the latter needs “a great role.” The sentence “living in a highly compact apartment strips of personal privacy” has a faulty verb pattern: “strips people of personal privacy” would be grammatical. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues, such as the comma splice in “On one hand, countrysides are like the fingerprint … and offer …” (the comma after “Specifically” is also unnecessary). Review articles, verb patterns, and punctuation while retaining your varied sentence structures.
