Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many areas countryside are the only available space for buildings new homes, many people believes it is very essential to preserve the country side and new homes shouldn't be build there. In my own opinion countryside should be preserve for the benefits of people already living there.

Because of the increase in population many people has resulted in building new apartments in countryside that are supposed to be preserves, for example building in waterway, building in green areas meant to beautify the environment and provided a fresh air for the inhabitants living in the countryside already.

The recent flood experience in many parts of Nigeria are caused by people building on water ways by so doing blocks free flow of water, this has caused destruction of property and loss of lives in May areas, most recently Nepal in Asia.

During my one year compulsory service to my country, the lodge that was meant for service Men and women was a disaster because any time it rains water will start coming from the floor and fill the house, this got many of our property damage, it makes our mind to fly each time it wants to rain.

i strongly believe that our countryside should be preserve because building new houses in such areas are likely to cause natural disaster which will be very regratable, because lives and prosperities that we can not be able to replace easily with be destroyed, it is very necessary to preserve our countryside the benefits are nemerous .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the countryside should be preserved, and you give relevant reasons, especially the risk of flooding when homes are built on waterways. The examples from Nigeria and your compulsory service make the argument more personal and concrete. However, the response focuses mainly on flooding and damage, so the broader case for protecting rural land is less developed. The opening also refers to benefits for people already living there without explaining these benefits fully, and the conclusion repeats the main claim rather than drawing the reasons together. To strengthen the response, explain more fully how development affects the environment or existing communities, and connect each example explicitly to your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a concluding statement. The examples generally follow the central argument, and phrases such as “for example” and “During my one year compulsory service” help signal evidence. However, progression is sometimes unclear. The second paragraph combines population growth, apartments, waterways, and green areas without showing how each point connects. The flood example then shifts abruptly from Nigeria to Nepal, while the personal account is presented as a long sentence with several linked ideas. Use clearer topic sentences and divide related points into shorter, logically ordered sentences. More precise referencing would also help readers follow which places and events each claim refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “preserve,” “population,” “waterways,” “destruction of property,” and “loss of lives.” These choices communicate the main concerns and show some range beyond basic everyday language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “building in waterway,” “provided a fresh air,” and “our mind to fly.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “regratable,” “prosperities,” and “nemerous,” also reduce precision. Aim to learn common topic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for environmental effects and housing development would help you express your ideas clearly without relying on repeated references to damage and disaster.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “Because of the increase in population…” and a relative clause in “the lodge that was meant for service Men and women.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main message is usually understandable. However, there are some recurring errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction: “countryside are,” “many people believes,” “shouldn't be build,” and “many people has resulted” are examples. Some sentences also run together, particularly the opening and the final paragraph, making relationships between clauses harder to follow. Practise subject–verb agreement and passive forms, and use full stops to separate complete ideas. These changes would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex sentences.
