Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Philip,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I'm writing this letter to in regards to make a request that if I can work in our head office at Boston for the next six months. I have learnt a lot while working in logistics, however I have no information on how process gets done. Spending a six months at head office will give me an opportunity to improve my skills and knowledge which will be helpful for me to grow within the organization.
While I'm out of the country, I'll be still able to finish all my pending and current work as I'm in head office and will have all the necessary equipment to finish up.
I'll be grateful to you, if you could help me to make a request to the head office and get me an approval.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Your's sincerely.
Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that a placement in Boston would build your logistics knowledge and support your growth, say you could continue your work while away, and ask Philip to help obtain approval. This covers the task clearly and gives a relevant reason for the request. The explanation of how your duties would be managed is less fully developed, however: saying you will complete pending and current work because you will have equipment does not explain how you will coordinate with your present team or handle responsibilities across locations. The request for help is also somewhat indirect. To strengthen the letter, specify a practical work arrangement and make the approval request more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: an opening, the reason for the proposed placement, an explanation of work continuity, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and phrases such as “While I'm out of the country” signal a shift to the practical arrangements. The ideas are generally easy to follow, though the work-continuity paragraph is brief and its connection between being at head office and completing current duties is not fully explained. The opening sentence also contains a crowded request, which slightly interrupts the flow. A more direct opening followed by a fuller, logically ordered explanation of responsibilities would make the organisation more consistently effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant workplace language such as “logistics,” “head office,” “pending,” and “organization.” These choices make the topic clear, but the range is limited and some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, reducing precision. For example, “in regards to make a request” is an awkward way to introduce the purpose, while “how process gets done” is vague and lacks a clear reference to the company’s procedures. “Finish up” is also more conversational than ideal for a formal request. Aim for precise business collocations and a consistently professional register, such as describing the procedures you want to learn and how you would coordinate your duties remotely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “which will be helpful for me to grow” and the conditional request “if you could help me.” The main message remains understandable, and some sentences are controlled. However, some grammatical errors affect accuracy: “I’m writing this letter to in regards to make a request that if I can work” has an incorrect construction, and “I have no information on how process gets done” is missing an article and has an unclear noun phrase. There are also article and number problems in “a six months.” Review sentence patterns for making requests, article use, and singular/plural forms. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
