Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to make a request to work in our company's head office located in Canada.
There are a couple of reasons for making this request. Firstly, the main reason is that I want to improve communication skills in English as sometimes I face difficulties communicating in English. This will not only help me to improve my skills but also benefit the company during international client meetings. Moreover, I have always dreamed of learning foreign traditions and cultures. Hence, by staying there for six months I will get that exposure.
Although I know it will be hard for me to fulfil responsibilities, I will try to manage my work by scheduling additional meetings with my colleagues. In addition, if there are any emergencies, then I will also work according to Indian time zone.
I would really appreciate it if you can grant me permission to work in our head office. I am eagerly waiting for your response.
Yours faithfully,
Dhruv Bavadiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a practical solution for your workload, and include a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific detail regarding the 'work' that needs to be covered, perhaps mentioning specific projects or handover processes, which would add further depth to your proposal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'In addition' to link your ideas logically. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that the transition between the personal motivation and the practical work arrangements feels slightly more integrated, perhaps by using a concluding sentence in the second paragraph that bridges into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'fulfil responsibilities' and 'grant me permission' are appropriate for the formal context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated collocations. For example, 'improve communication skills' is accurate but basic. Incorporating more precise business-related terminology would elevate your score. The spelling is accurate throughout, and there are no instances where word choice impedes communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor areas for improvement, such as the phrasing 'I want to improve communication skills in English as sometimes I face difficulties communicating in English', which is slightly repetitive. Additionally, 'if there are any emergencies, then I will also work' could be more concisely phrased. Overall, your grammar is accurate and does not hinder the reader's understanding of your request.
