Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you that please provide me with an opportunity of working at head office of our company.

Indeed, I would love to work at our company's head office for six months. The reason is working for the specific period of six months will be an adequate time period in which, I will be able to learn a lot of new skills, time efficiency, and work culture. Additionally, working with highly professional and experienced seniors can help me find better ways to tackle difficult situations.

I will complete my current assignments and rest of the work I will give an update to my colleagues and handover my job duties also to them. They will be taking care of it, and if any queries then, I will be in contact and helping them out through e-mail.

Please assist me with requesting at head office and arrange for my accommodation over there.

Yours faithfully,

DALER ARORA

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the purpose of the request, explain how your workload will be managed during your absence, and ask for assistance with the logistics. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how your work will be handled is a bit vague, and the request for accommodation is abrupt. Expanding slightly on the specific benefits to the company or providing more detail on the handover process would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Indeed', 'Additionally', and 'if any queries then'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the connection between the handover process and the offer to remain in contact could be more fluid. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'adequate time period', 'tackle difficult situations', and 'handover my job duties'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision that would characterize a higher band. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'request you that please provide me with an opportunity'. Expanding your repertoire to include more sophisticated business collocations would improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'request you that please provide me' (which should be 'request that you provide me') and 'rest of the work I will give an update' (which is slightly awkward). Additionally, 'They will be taking care of it, and if any queries then' is a fragmented construction. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex sentence forms and prepositional usage.
