Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well, I am writing this letter as a request to you regarding my willing to work in Company's head office in California, US. Initially I started as an intern and recently I got a chance to meet with an employee of our company and I get to know that their are other more personalities who influenced me to work in this sector in this specific company. I would like to meet them in person.
I already got a new laptop to do my work from un-official places, whether I am here or somewhere else it will not affect my performance, moreover I will always get connected with team member to never miss a small thing related to work. Again I would like to request you kindly help me to make my dream come true. I will wait for you reply.
Thanks,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the plan for work coverage, and the request for assistance. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited. The explanation for wanting to work in the head office is vague, focusing on meeting people rather than professional development or specific project goals. The explanation of how work will be covered is also underdeveloped, relying on the mention of a laptop rather than a clear handover or workflow strategy. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about how your absence will be managed and why this move is beneficial for both you and the company.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a formal request. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'Initially I started...' and 'Again I would like to request...' feels slightly forced. The flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed, particularly in the first paragraph where the connection between the internship and the desire to meet people is not clearly articulated. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would improve the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. You rely on simple phrasing such as 'get to know', 'make my dream come true', and 'do my work'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'un-official places' and 'other more personalities'. To improve, try to use more professional, business-appropriate terminology. For instance, instead of saying you want to 'meet them in person', you could describe it as 'fostering professional collaboration' or 'gaining insights from senior colleagues'. Expanding your range of formal vocabulary will significantly enhance the professional tone of your correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'their are other more personalities' should be 'there are other people', and 'I already got a new laptop' is better expressed as 'I have already acquired a new laptop'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices in the first paragraph. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of subject-verb agreement and formal sentence construction.
