Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to request an onsite opportunity to work in a company head office at United States for an six months duration.
My favorite country is USA. Since I joined in our company, it's my dream to travel for an onsite to the client location. Near to head office there are several iconic places across, I would like to explore during my visit. Additionally, I'm more exited to work with business users in company head office. Definitely this six months experience will give great confidence and boost my profile.
Before I travel, I will transfer the project knowledge and documents to another resource who has similar experience in this project. In addition to that, I'll schedule daily meetings to make sure the tasks completion.
This travel requires some pre-approvals from the delivery manager and finance team. I would appreciate if you could create the travel request and get the approvals from them. Also, It would be helpful if you could arrange the flight tickets with the help of travel team.
I look forward to seeing your positive response approving the my travel.
Yours faithfully,
john

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the purpose of the request, explain how your workload will be managed during your absence, and ask for specific assistance with the logistics. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation for wanting to go to the head office focuses heavily on personal travel interests ('iconic places') rather than professional development or business benefits, which would be more persuasive in a formal letter. While the task is fully addressed, the tone is occasionally too informal for a request to a manager, which impacts the overall effectiveness of the communication.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Before I travel', and 'In addition to that' to link your ideas. While these are functional, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the personal motivation for the trip and the professional handover plan could be smoother. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter format.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'onsite opportunity', 'transfer the project knowledge', and 'pre-approvals'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'travel for an onsite' (should be 'onsite assignment') and 'exited' (likely a misspelling of 'excited'). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'make sure the tasks completion'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more precise professional collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('at United States', 'for an six months') and prepositions ('joined in our company'). You also have some minor punctuation and syntax issues, such as 'approving the my travel'. While you attempt complex sentences, the accuracy is inconsistent. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading to ensure better control over basic grammatical rules.
