Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to request an opportunity to work at our company head office in United States for a period of six months.
The USA has always been my favorite country. Since I joined in our company, it has been my dream to travel for an onsite to the client location. The head office is located in USA famous city in Newyork there are several vibrant places, I would like to explore during my visit. Additionally, I'm more exited to work with business users in company head office. Definitely this six months experience will develop great confidence and boost my profile.
Before I travel, I will transfer the project knowledge and documents to another resource who has similar experience in this project. In addition to that, I'll schedule daily meetings to make sure the tasks completion.
This travel requires some pre-approvals from the delivery manager and finance team. I would appreciate if you could create the travel request and get the approvals from them. Also, It would be helpful if you could arrange the flight tickets with the help of travel team.
I look forward to seeing your positive response approving the my travel.
Yours faithfully,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the motivation, proposing a handover plan, and requesting administrative assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation for wanting to work in the US focuses heavily on personal travel interests rather than professional development or business benefits, which would be more persuasive in a workplace context. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the arguments could be improved to better reflect a professional standard.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Before I travel', and 'In addition to that' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'travel for an onsite' (should be 'travel for an on-site assignment') and 'tasks completion' (should be 'task completion'). You also have some spelling errors like 'exited' instead of 'excited' and 'Newyork' instead of 'New York'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of professional collocations to demonstrate more sophisticated control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'Since I joined in our company' (the 'in' is unnecessary), 'approving the my travel' (a double determiner error), and 'in United States' (missing the definite article 'the'). While you attempt complex sentences, the accuracy is inconsistent. The punctuation is generally functional, but the errors mentioned above occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and prepositional phrases will help improve your overall grammatical accuracy.
