Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. John,
I am writing to request you that I would like to work in a main headquarter of our company for six months.
There are some reasons why I want to spend around half year in the head office. Firstly, I want to explore the main foundation and know about the working structure in detailed which will allow us to implement in our department. Moreover, I would have the opportunity to meet various background clients in order to understand their perspectives. So, we will target on a particular this area to develop our business.
If you give me permission for it, I would manage my current tasks by video conference and e-mail. Furthermore, my colleague agrees to handle my workload in which requires to be present in person in the specific projects while I am away.
Could you please approve my request for the better growth of our corporation? I assume that accommodation costs and airfares are covered by our organization.
I look forward to your positive response. Thank you for the consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated your desire to work at the head office, explained how your current workload would be managed, and asked for assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, some ideas are slightly underdeveloped; for instance, the explanation of how you would 'target a particular area' is vague. To improve, ensure that your justifications are more specific and directly linked to the company's goals. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is even smoother and avoid slightly repetitive sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'implement', 'perspectives', and 'corporation'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'main headquarter' (should be 'headquarters') and 'background clients' (which is slightly unnatural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and professional business terminology will help elevate your writing. Overall, the language used is functional and appropriate for a professional context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'request you that I would like to' (should be 'request to work' or 'request that I be allowed to work') and 'in which requires' (should be 'which requires'). Additionally, 'a main headquarter' is grammatically incorrect as 'headquarters' is typically used as a singular noun. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, pay closer attention to verb patterns and noun-number agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
