Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I am really privileged to work with our company, I learned a lot of things here which were new to me when I joined here. Working with an international company comes with various opportunities, so I want to explore them, I want to work in our head office in Indonesia for six months. This experience will help me in different prospects, like having knowledge of various strategies that higher authorities use to increase sales of the company or many more. I have proved my skills by meeting the deadlines, leading the team and be a good team player.

One of the staff member is interested in taking the position in place of me when I'm going to be away for the time period. It would be generous of you, if you can arrange the things for me. I think I truly deserve a chance to broaden my horizon.

Thank you

Anita

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your motivation for the transfer, suggest a colleague to cover your duties, and request the manager's assistance. However, the development of these points is somewhat thin. For instance, the explanation of how your work will be covered is vague, and the request for help is phrased in a slightly informal manner. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about your current projects and how the transition will be managed to ensure business continuity. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional request, though it leans slightly towards being overly casual in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical sections, moving from the purpose of the letter to the proposal and finally the request. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is essentially one block of text, which hinders readability. While you use some cohesive devices like 'so' and 'in place of me', the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The transition between the explanation of your skills and the request for the transfer could be smoother. Using more varied linking words and clearer paragraph breaks would significantly improve the overall structure and logical progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'privileged', 'international company', and 'broaden my horizon'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'different prospects' (which does not fit the context well) and 'arrange the things for me' (which is quite informal and vague). You rely on some repetitive phrasing, such as 'work with our company' and 'work in our head office'. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and avoiding overly simplistic phrasing when describing business processes or professional requests.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the flow. For example, 'I learned a lot of things here which were new to me when I joined here' is wordy and slightly awkward. There are also punctuation issues, such as comma splices (e.g., '...various opportunities, so I want to explore them, I want to work...'). Additionally, 'One of the staff member' should be 'One of the staff members'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of complex sentence construction.
