Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Steve,

I am writing this letter to express my interest to get transferred to our company's head office that is located in Australia for the upcoming six months. There are many reasons for this transfer request. But the most prominent one is to get work experience at a large scale that can only happen if I 'll get a chance to work in our company's main branch means headquarters. Others reason is that by working internationally, I'll get to know about working standards of our international employees. How they manage work pressure, their routine, work ethics and many more learnings.

I know you are also curious about my work completion here in our branch. For that I suggest you to hire a qualified individual for 6 months on contract basis. Therefore, while I'll be away, there will be no problem of accumulation of my work at our branch.

Therefore, I request you to put my reference for the upcoming 6 months internship in our head office through your connections in the top level. I know that you believe in all my skills and qualifications for this intern role and I can do better for our organization by gaining valuable experience of head office. I hope you will consider my this request and take action on it.

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the purpose of the request, propose a solution for your current workload, and ask for the manager's assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how your work would be covered is quite brief, and the request for the manager to use their 'connections' is slightly informal and lacks professional nuance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more fully extended and that the professional register is consistently maintained throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'For that', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the connection between sentences in the first paragraph could be smoother. For example, the transition between 'There are many reasons' and 'But the most prominent one' is slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this request') is always clear will help improve the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prominent', 'qualified individual', and 'accumulation'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'get transferred to' (better: 'request a transfer to') and 'many more learnings' (better: 'valuable insights'). Additionally, the phrase 'put my reference' is not standard business English; 'provide a recommendation' or 'support my application' would be more appropriate. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'interest to get transferred' (should be 'interest in transferring'), 'Others reason' (should be 'Another reason'), and 'consider my this request' (should be 'consider this request'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pronouns. Your control over punctuation is generally good, but be mindful of word order and preposition usage in professional contexts.
