Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear John,

I wanted to inform you that I would like to work at the company head office in Paris for a period of six months.

I find it greatly delightful in exploring different cultures and customs, the French culture in particular has dearly intrigued me. Having known the French language, I am confident that I would be able to handle day-to-day life and office tasks effectively. Given the opportunity I shall be able to meet few of my University colleagues who are now working at the same office in Paris and could also help me settle there initially.

As I am wrapping up my current project in following two months, I thought it would be a perfect moment to make you aware of my future plans. My current project can be handed over to the junior engineer whom I have been training myself since last few months if needed be.

It would be very generous of you if you could circulate my profile across the company for any related opportunities and also guide me for visa procedures and travel related formalities.

Thank you for your time and consideration to this matter.

Regards,

Maria Sharapova

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the move, proposed a viable solution for your current workload by suggesting a handover to a junior engineer, and made a polite request for assistance regarding administrative procedures. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear rationale for the request. The letter maintains a consistent purpose throughout, and the structure is logical, ensuring the reader understands your intentions and the necessary next steps.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your logic easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Given the opportunity', 'As I am wrapping up', and 'It would be very generous of you' to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth. There is a logical transition from the personal motivation to the practical work arrangements and finally to the request for assistance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'inform', 'effectively', 'circulate', and 'formalities'. While some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'I find it greatly delightful in exploring', the meaning remains clear. You attempt to use more sophisticated collocations, which is positive. To reach a higher band, focus on refining word choices to sound more natural in a professional context. For example, 'dearly intrigued' is a bit unusual; 'deeply interested' or 'keenly interested' would be more standard. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'It would be very generous of you if you could...' and the participial phrase 'Having known the French language'. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'in following two months' (should be 'in the following two months') and 'since last few months' (should be 'for the last few months'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong.
