Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manger,

I am writing to request a six months work in our head office which is in Australia. I am very keen to work in our head quarter because it will give me chance to meet with our operation team who are handling the project in Australia. This would be beneficial as I can discuss ongoing projects on which I am working and understand their concerns.

When I am away, my assistant will handle my some of the works on which he could be work under my guidance. Also, I can connect with him to explain every project which we need to deliver after I will away.

I would like to ask for your help in arranging my temporary sitting in our head office with our operation team. Also, it would be appreciated if you could arrange my flight and accommodation for six months.

I hope you will accept my request for working in a head office.

Your sincerely,

Nishu Agrawal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, suggest a plan for your workload, and request assistance with logistics. The tone is appropriate for a professional request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your work will be handled is a bit vague, and the request for flight and accommodation arrangements could be more professionally phrased to sound like a request for company policy guidance rather than a direct demand. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but more detail would improve the quality of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Also' and 'When I am away', to link your thoughts. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which helps the reader navigate the content effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'beneficial', 'ongoing projects', and 'temporary sitting'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'six months work' (should be 'a six-month work placement') and 'head quarter' (should be 'headquarters'). Additionally, 'my some of the works' is awkward phrasing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band score. Improving your control over professional collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to request...' and 'This would be beneficial as I can discuss...'. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including 'he could be work' (should be 'he could work'), 'after I will away' (should be 'after I am away'), and 'Your sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). These errors are frequent but do not impede the overall communication of your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and future tense constructions.
