Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Joey,

I am writing to formally request your assistance regarding the training of a supervisor position at New York head office for approximately six months.

There are various benefits behind the plan of my visit to head office. First and foremost, it will help me to analyze and absorb the pressure created by tensed situation during the meeting with the stake holders. On top of that, I can also learn about the team coordinations while performing any tasks.

Currently I am working as a developer, I can easily do my work simultaneously while gaining new experiences at the head office. Additionally, I will be available all the time to work on any task given by you.

It would be great if you will help me out in my documentations for the visa purposes. Also, I need assistance regarding the accommodation in the city.

I trust that you will give this matter your immediate attention. Your cooperation in this regard is highly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation for the transfer, suggested how your work would be managed, and requested assistance with logistics. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat thin. For instance, the explanation of how your work would be done is vague; stating you can 'easily do my work simultaneously' lacks the professional detail a manager would expect regarding handover or remote collaboration. To reach a higher band, provide more specific examples of how your current projects would be managed or delegated during your absence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'On top of that', and 'Additionally' to transition between ideas. While these are functional, the flow is occasionally mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, but the relationship between your current role as a developer and the specific tasks you would perform in New York could be better linked to demonstrate a more sophisticated grasp of professional communication. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'formally request', 'stake holders', and 'accommodation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'training of a supervisor position' is unnatural; it would be better to say 'a temporary assignment in a supervisory role'. Similarly, 'tensed situation' should be 'tense situations'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over professional terminology to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'It would be great if you will help me out', where the conditional structure should be 'if you would help me' or 'if you could help me'. Additionally, 'documentations' is an uncountable noun and should simply be 'documentation'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and your control over basic sentence patterns is consistent. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage in conditional sentences.
