Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Varinder,

I am writing to express my interest to work at Sofina Foods head-quarters in Toronto, Canada for atleast six months.

As, I am observing some discrepancies in our finances, I would like to visit the head office and initiate an investigation for it. This will gives us a chance to get closure look into overall company's finances and maybe, we can save our company from getting bankrupt.

Before leaving for the Toronto, I would like Lina to take over my current tasks and for this I am going to start her training next week. She is already aware about most of tasks that she needs to perform but in case of emergencies, I will be always available on-call.

I would appreciate if you could help me with the accommodation near our head office which could ease my commute time. I hope to hear from you soon in order to book my flight tickets.

Thank you

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the visit, outlining the handover process, and requesting assistance with accommodation. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter. However, the explanation regarding the 'discrepancies in our finances' is slightly alarming for a professional context and could be phrased more diplomatically. Additionally, the request for help with accommodation is a bit abrupt. To improve, ensure your ideas are fully developed and maintain a consistent professional tone throughout the letter. You have successfully met the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Before leaving' and 'In case of', to link your sentences. However, some transitions could be smoother, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more explicitly stated to improve the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'initiate an investigation' and 'on-call' are appropriate for a business context. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'get closure look' (should be 'closer look') and 'getting bankrupt' (should be 'going bankrupt'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of professional collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'interest to work' (should be 'interest in working'), 'This will gives us' (should be 'This will give us'), and 'the Toronto' (remove 'the'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will also help improve your score in this criterion.
