Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Varinder,

I am writing to express my interest in working at Sofina Foods headquarters in Toronto, Canada for at least six months.

As I am observing some discrepancies in our finances, I would like to visit the head office and initiate an investigation for it. This will gives us a chance to get a closer look into company's finances and maybe, we can save our company from bankruptcy.

Before leaving for Toronto, I would like Lina to take over my current tasks and for this I am going to start her training next week. She is already aware about most of the tasks that she needs to perform but in case of emergencies, I will be always available on-call.

I would appreciate if you could help me with the accommodation near our head office which could ease my commute time. I hope to hear from you soon in order to book my flight tickets.

Thank you

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a viable solution for your current workload by mentioning Lina’s training, and made a specific request for assistance with accommodation. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, explaining how your presence in the head office would specifically benefit the company beyond just investigating finances. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Before leaving' and 'in case of emergencies' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'discrepancies', 'initiate an investigation', and 'on-call'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common vocabulary to show greater flexibility. For example, instead of 'get a closer look', you could use 'conduct a thorough analysis'. The current vocabulary is functional and appropriate for a workplace context, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are a few grammatical slips. For instance, 'This will gives us' should be 'This will give us', and 'investigation for it' is slightly unnatural; 'investigation into these' would be better. Additionally, 'aware about' should be 'aware of'. Despite these minor errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not cause any confusion for the reader. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help improve this score.
