Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Dan Lough,
I am writing to make a request to work in the head office of our company which is in California for about six months. As there are top leaders of the company working there, It will provide me an opportunity to interact with them and being able to understand the organizational hierarchy. Moreover, it will be significantly beneficial for my development by learning new strategies and skills to develop.
I have delegated some of my responsibilities to Lovejeet and he is really confident to take care of them while I am away. In addition, I will send a daily detailed email of all the task which are required to be done with the timelines, so it will be easy for you to track the progress.
I would appreciate it if you could help in arranging the meeting with the key team members in the head office and I would be grateful if you could ask the company to arrange my accommodation.
Yours faithfully,
Palvinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, outlined a delegation plan for your current duties, and made specific requests for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, by mentioning specific projects or company goals you hope to contribute to in California. This would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task development. Overall, the response is purposeful and meets all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, each corresponding to a specific requirement of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'I would appreciate it if' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'all the task' should be pluralized to 'all the tasks' to maintain consistency. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'organizational hierarchy', 'delegated some of my responsibilities', and 'significantly beneficial' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. There are minor issues, such as 'being able to understand' which is slightly clunky; 'to gain an understanding of' would be more natural. You also have a small error in 'all the task', which should be 'all the tasks'. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is precise enough to communicate your intentions without any difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I would appreciate it if you could help in arranging...' is a good use of a complex structure. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'It will provide me an opportunity' (the 'It' should be lowercase) and 'all the task which are required' (should be 'tasks'). Additionally, 'being able to understand' is grammatically inconsistent with the preceding infinitive 'to interact'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-constructed.
