Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter to express my interest in working in the head office in the USA for six months only. First of all, my name is Shraddha, and I am working as a marketing manager in your company.

Apart from this, I am interested in working in the USA because I want to know why our sales are not increasing compared to here. I want to understand people's perception and behaviour towards our products. Moreover, you must be worried about here; for that, I will arrange for someone who can work here for me, and if he needs any guidance, I will help him from the USA.

Furthermore, I would like to request you to assist me in arranging it for me. As it is for the growth in the future, and it will give me opportunities for a better career.

I would really appreciate to look forward to you.

Thank you,

S

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, proposing a plan for your current workload, and asking for assistance. The purpose of the letter is clear. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of how your work will be covered is vague ('I will arrange for someone'), and the request for help could be more formal and persuasive. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully developed and the tone is consistently professional, as this is a formal request to a manager.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Apart from this', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While the progression is generally clear, the transitions can feel a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on a list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'express my interest', 'perception', and 'guidance'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'I would really appreciate to look forward to you', which is not a standard English expression. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focus on using more professional collocations and avoiding repetitive or slightly unnatural phrasing to enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am working as a marketing manager' (should be 'I work') and 'you must be worried about here' (which is slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentence constructions are slightly clunky. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more control over complex structures and a better grasp of formal English syntax.
