Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this email to express my keen interest for working in a head office USA at Walmart for next 6 months.

At the moment, I'm contributing to Walmart as an OMNI department manager and I have gained suitable experience. While working in Canada, I got the opportunity to step up for my accounting skills in USA as apart of collaboration with account.com. Therefor, I would like to get into our head office and would like to be a part of the team for 6 months.

This way, I will boost my confidence, life changing skills ,and I will make new friends there! To add on, I'm responsible for my current work and have already made the arrangements to prevent underwork while I'm away!

If you are happy to support, I would love to ask about if there are any accommodation available. Thank you for your vivid understanding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain your motivation, touch upon how your work will be managed, and request assistance. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of how your work will be handled while you are away is vague; stating you have 'made arrangements' lacks the professional detail expected in a formal business request. To improve, you should provide more concrete details about the handover process or the specific projects you intend to focus on at the head office to better demonstrate your professional intent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'At the moment', 'While', and 'To add on'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. The use of 'To add on' is not standard formal English; 'Furthermore' or 'In addition' would be more appropriate. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow your request clearly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'keen interest', 'collaboration', and 'arrangements'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'vivid understanding' is an unnatural collocation in this context; 'kind understanding' or 'support' would be better. Additionally, 'underwork' is not a standard term in a business context. You should focus on using more precise professional terminology to enhance the formal tone of your letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'interest for working' (should be 'interest in working'), 'in a head office USA' (should be 'at the head office in the USA'), and 'Therefor' (spelling error: 'Therefore'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing.
